Details
- ULCPCs are a new and growing class of devices and MS is excited about the opportunities it is creating for the new PC marketplace. This category is drawing interest from a variety of customers. With ULCPCs, first-time PC buyers with limited needs have an affordable first PC that runs Windows. Also, many consumers in both mature and emerging markets are interested in low-cost companions to their primary Windows-based PCs, and are buying them for themselves and for their children. There is also strong interest in these devices within the public sector, from governments, and schools.
Through this ULCPC Program, MS is looking forward to working jointly with its OEM partners to serve this expanding market and class of consumers.
- Timing
- MS anticipates a full roll-out of this Program by June 2008, by which time MS will have a new SKU and licensable for Windows XP Home Edition specifically for this device category. With that said, MS is very interested in understanding any plans by OEMs for this ULCPC category. To the extent OEMs plan production of devices prior to June 1, 2008, OEMs should contact their Account Manager immediately to discuss all possible options for delivering a genuine Windows solution. Pricing and hardware changes shall be available immediately upon completion by OEMs of the MS Fast Track Amendment adding the new ULCPC SKUs. We will be providing further details of this Amendment in the coming weeks.
- Eligible Systems
- For purposes of Program eligibility, ULCPCs will be defined as devices with the below hardware specifications. Only those systems meeting this criteria will be eligible for the reduced royalty described above.
- The system has a maximum built in display of 10.2 inches (measured diagonally) and;
- The system has a maximum built in flash drive as main storage of 16 GB and/or a hard drive with the maximum storage of 80 GB and;
- The system has maximum of 1.0 GB of RAM and;
- The system has a maximum of 1.0GHz single core CPU; or Intel Atom N270; or Intel Celeron 220; or AMD Geode LX; or VIA C7-M (ULV) CPU and;
- Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with a maximum of DirectX 9.0 capability; and
- The system does not have touch screen capabilities.
- Windows XP Home End of Life
- MS is further announcing that Windows XP Home Edition EOL for Direct OEMs – for the ULCPC device category ONLY - will be extended from the currently scheduled date of June 30, 2008 through June 30, 2010 or one year after the next release of Windows (whichever is later).
- Miscellaneous
- Microsoft also plans to make available additional offerings, including a productivity application for use on a ULCPC, via a separate license agreement.
- Next Steps for OEMs: Review the above information carefully. OEMs should provide program feedback or questions to their Account Manager by April 10, 2008.
Support
Microsoft will not be extending product support for Windows XP products beyond currently published dates of April 14, 2009 for mainstream support and April 8, 2014 for extended support. More details can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselectwin.
Downgrade Rights
Consistent with the current plan of record, direct OEMs have the ability to provide drop-in-the box (DIB) Windows XP recovery media for systems factory installed with Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate for end user ease and convenience. This option remains available through January 31, 2009.
