The Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) architecture has become the most common method used to extend PCs for add-on adapters. PCI Express advances low-cost, scalable computing for the next generation of computing platforms. Starting with Windows Vista, Windows operating systems support PCI Express features as defined in the PCI Express specification. Earlier versions of Windows use the basic PCI infrastructure to gain information about devices attached to the PCI bus.
