The Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system codenamed "R2" Beta 2 includes features designed to improve management of the server hardware. These features enable management of the server hardware locally and remotely using a standard firewall-friendly protocol, use of a single protocol to control and diagnose the server hardware when the operating system is not running or deployed, and operating system awareness of the hardware state of the host server platform.
This paper describes how to configure and use Windows Server 2003 "R2" Beta 2 hardware management to communicate with local baseboard management controllers (BMCs) using the IPMI driver and provider in a WS-Management-based architecture, which allows for firewall-friendly platform management between Windows Server 2003 "R2" Beta 2 systems.
