Reminder: Boot Start Drivers Must Be Embedded-Signed for x86 and x64

As of June 1, 2007, all boot start drivers for x86 and x64 versions of Windows Vista must be embedded-signed before being submitted to the Windows Quality Online Services (Winqual) Web site. The requirement for embedded-signing for boot start is defined in Windows Logo Program requirement DEVFUND-0027 for devices, as well as in requirements SYSFUND-0002 and SYSFUND-0122 for Windows Vista systems, and in requirements SYSFUND-0054 and SYSFUND-0122 for Windows Server 2008 systems.

Embedded-signing must be done through self-signing using a software publishing certificate (SPC), and must be completed before submitting your package to Winqual. For information about how to prepare embedded-signing for boot start drivers, see the Kernel Mode Code Signing Walkthrough white paper at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winlogo/drvsign/kmcs_walkthrough.mspx.

Save the Date: OSR WDF (Windows Driver Foundation) Quick Start Seminars Featuring 2 Microsoft-Led Sessions

Whether you're an experienced WDM driver writer or a total newbie to Windows drivers, you need to understand the Windows Driver Foundation--Microsoft's newest driver development architecture. The purpose of these WDF Quick Start seminars is to prepare you for WDF driver development in the quickest and easiest possible manner. As a bonus, the Microsoft Windows team is presenting two sessions:

-- World-Class Testing and Prototyping Using WDK/DSF
This Microsoft-presented session shows you how to produce world-class drivers by practical application of the test tools and methodologies provided by and used at Microsoft. You will learn how to use Device Simulation Framework (DSF) to simulate hardware to detect bugs earlier in the development cycle, reducing overall development, test, and maintenance costs. Driver-testing best practices will also be covered, including the use of tools such as PREfast for Drivers, Static Driver Verifier, and others.

-- Releasing World-Class Drivers (Signed, Certified & Logo'd)
Taking a near-completed device driver from prototype to released product involves more than just posting it on the Web. In this Microsoft-presented session you will learn how to finish your driver by signing, submitting, and gaining the Windows logo. This not only allows the driver to be distributed widely by Windows Update, but also shows your customers that you have followed Microsoft's recommended best practices to produce a world-class driver.

These seminars are run by OSR, a leading consulting and training company that specializes in WDF. Learn from the experts at OSR and from the Microsoft Windows Division staff in these unique events. Space is limited, so book early.
