Ahem.

Right, for the first challenge response on my newly ported-to-clubhouse blog it’s time to explain some little known things about playing digital video on Windows. 

Before 7 came along, you could only watch video in Media player if it was in a native windows format (WMV, AVI etc.)  If you wanted to watch anything in a more ‘professional’ format such as h.264, quicktime, MOV etc. then you would have to download Apple’s QuickTime player.  Which, as many will know is awful.

However, there is now an alternative.  Windows Media Player for Windows 7 will now play all of these other formats natively, i.e. without the need for extra plugins, decoders or software. 

For example, this video taken on my Windows Phone in MP4 format.  Before, this would only play using Quicktime.  Now though, Media Player will play this itself

In case your interested, this video was take on top of The Monument, in London.  

Not only that, but why would we need 1 piece of software for watching some video formats (Quicktime for everything, iTunes for .m4v) and another entirely different piece of software for listening to music when there is already a single piece of software that does it all?
