Have you been putting off using your computer to fix and share your digital photos? If you have Windows Vista, it's easier than ever to get pictures onto your computer, and then fix, share, print, and save them.

The first step is transferring (importing) pictures from your camera to your computer. There are two basic ways you can do this: either connect the two with a cable, or take the memory card out of your camera, and insert it into a card reader.

Connect the camera directly. You can import pictures by connecting the camera directly to your computer using a universal serial bus (USB) cable. With this method, your camera must be turned on, so importing pictures will use some battery power. You'll also need to keep the cable handy if you import pictures regularly. Keeping the cable with your camera bag may be a good idea. After you plug the cable into the computer, turn on your camera. Windows should recognize your camera and begin the import process.
