Windows Defender: False Positive Form

If Windows Defender has mistaken your program for another program, it might trigger a false positive. The first step to resolve a false positive result is to fill out the following False Positive Report form. Please submit your request in English if possible, as submissions in other languages may cause a longer response time or impair our ability to respond completely and correctly.

The research team will confirm the receipt of the form, contact you with follow-up questions if necessary, and provide the results of the investigation by e-mail through the contact information that you provide in the form. Microsoft will make every effort to expedite the process and respond in a timely manner.

Use this form only for circumstances in which Windows Defender might have mistakenly identified one software program as another. Vendor disputes are handled through the vendor dispute form.

If you are the vendor of a product that you believe has been incorrectly classified, or if you have recently updated the behavior of your program and want to request reclassification, please complete the vendor dispute form.

If you have questions about this form, you can contact Microsoft at mpcreply@microsoft.com. Note: You must first complete and submit the False Positive Report form to initiate the review process.

You must complete all of the required fields in the form (marked with an asterisk *) before the Windows Defender research team can initiate an investigation. Please submit your request in English if possible, as submissions in other languages may cause a longer response time or impair our ability to respond completely and correctly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft is aware of third party software programs that try to resemble Microsoft software through deceptive naming and graphics in order to trick victims into providing personal and financial information. For support relating to an infection by fraudulent software, please contact Microsoft Help and Support. This web form is intended only for vendors who believe their software programs have been either incorrectly classified or mistakenly identified as another program by Windows Defender.

Submit a False Positive form

Submit a false positive file to Microsoft

If you believe a file is not spyware or adware and should not be detected by Windows Defender, you can send these files to Microsoft. The Windows Defender response team will analyze the files and determine if Microsoft needs to change Windows Defender.

To submit a false positive, compress the files you want to submit in an archive and then send an e-mail message that includes the archive to windefend@submit.microsoft.com by following these steps:

  1. In Windows Explorer, right-click a blank area in an open folder or on the desktop, point to New, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

  2. Type the name fp-spyware.zip for the new compressed folder, and then press the ENTER key.

  3. Drag the files you want to submit as false positives to the archive and drop them into the archive as you would drop them into a typical Windows folder.

  4. On the File menu, click Add a Password.

  5. In the Password box, type the password infected.

  6. In the Confirm Password box, type the password infected again.

  7. Compose a new e-mail message using any e-mail program that allows you to attach files to the message.

  8. In the To field, type windefend@submit.microsoft.com.

  9. In the Subject line, type False Positive: spyware.

  10. In the body of the message, include details about why you think the file is not spyware or adware.

  11. Attach the password-protected archive you created (fp-spyware.zip) to the message.

  12. Send the message.

Microsoft will analyze the submitted files and, when appropriate, update the detection capabilities in Windows Defender based on the results of the file analysis.

Thank you for taking the time to help improve Windows Defender.
