Windows Search 4.0 for IT Professionals

To alleviate the difficulties of sorting through documents and e-mail messages, your users may download and install desktop search tools on their machines in an ad hoc fashion—opening up your organization to security and privacy issues that potentially compromise the performance of your network. You need a search solution that can be deployed and seamlessly extended into the enterprise environment in a managed fashion.

Windows Search 4.0 offers the following features:

  • Index online mailboxes for quick and efficient searches, with minimal impact to Exchange Server.

  • Support safe indexing of encrypted files, allowing encrypted files to be indexed and instantly available in search results to users with appropriate permissions.

  • Search and access shared files (beyond your own PC and other Windows Vista PCs) that are stored on remote shares running Windows Search 4.0 and Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

  • Fine-tune the functionality of Windows Search 4.0 in the enterprise environment using flexible Group Policy and per-user settings.

Windows Search 4.0 is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems, can be deployed using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), and supports Group Policy for easy deployment and management across all the PCs in your organization. It is also ideal for kiosk environments because it runs as a system service instead of as a user application. This allows for more efficient indexing when multiple users share the same PC, and results in a more stable overall user experience.
