Windows Search supports more than 200 file types and data sources, and with the use of IFilters and connectors, can be extended to support the indexing of additional file types. Examples include PDFs via IFilters such as those contained within the Adobe or Foxit readers.
Support for safe indexing of encrypted files is available with Windows Search 4.0. Encrypted files can be indexed locally and the content made instantly available in search results to users with the correct permissions.

Windows Search 4.0 supports remote management by Group Policy—allowing IT administrators to apply policy settings to a set of targeted users and computers within an Active Directory service environment.
