Easily Increase Your Data Storage with Windows Home Server

Here's the step-by-step process

Windows Home Server Drive Extender is a new storage technology that enables you to use internal and external hard drives of any size, for additional storage on your home server. Even better, with Folder Duplication enabled, Windows Home Server ensures peace of mind because files stored in shared folders are automatically duplicated across multiple hard drives. Windows Home Server takes the guess work out of adding storage space and keeping your data secure.

Add a new hard drive to Windows Home Server

Step 1: Add a new hard drive to Windows Home Server
With the HP MediaSmart Server, there are no cables or tools necessary – you don't even need to turn-off your server.

To begin, swing open the server door and pull-out an empty drive tray:

  • Fold down the back of the tray (marked 1).
  • With the hard drive connectors facing away from you, angle the drive into the left set of pins (marked 2).
  • Flex the plastic on the right (marked 3) to snap the pins into place.

Slide the tray back into the server and lower the front try hinge until it snaps – the LED should turn purple after a few seconds.

Another option is to plug in an external hard drive via USB or eSTATA connections in the back of the HP MediaSmart Server.

Add the hard drive in the Windows Home Server Console

Step 2: Add the hard drive in the Windows Home Server Console
From the Windows Home Server Console, you can add the new hard drive to your home server by following a simple wizard.

Go to the Server Storage tab and you will see the hard drive that you just added. Highlight that drive and then:

  • Right-click and select Add.
  • When the "Add a Hard Drive" wizard appears, click the Next button.
  • A warning will state that the drive will be formatted. Click Finish to format the hard drive.

When completed, you will see a confirmation screen. To close the wizard, click Done. The LED should turn blue afterwards.

Enable Folder Duplication (optional)

Step 3: Enable Folder Duplication (optional)
Windows Home Server can help provide protection against hard-drive failures by ensuring that files stored in shared folders are automatically duplicated across multiple hard drives.
Duplication is configurable per shared folder. In the Windows Home Server Console, go to the Shared Folders tab:

  • Right-click on a shared folder and select Properties.
  • Check the box to Enable Folder Duplication.
  • Select OK. This shared folder will now have two copies, with each copy stored on a separate hard drive. This will not be visible to you but is working in the background.
