Windows Media Mobile Technology
Pay-Per-View, Rental, and Subscription VideoYou can build a mobile media solution using Windows Media mobile technology that enables your customers to purchase or rent video content or to obtain video subscriptions. Subscribers can search for and then download video on demand (VOD) content on a pay-per-view, rental, or subscription basis. The content is played back from storage on the devices or streamed to the devices over a wireless data network.
How It WorksContent providers encode movies and special events to Windows Media Audio and Video files by using Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. The files are encrypted by using Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10.
Handsets contain Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices, audio codecs such as Windows Media Audio 10 Professional or Windows Media Audio 9, and Windows Media Video 9 codecs. These Windows Media components enable the handsets to obtain DRM licenses, decrypt content, and then decode and play the video content. Licensing is managed by a server running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Windows Media Rights Manager 10. If the pay-per-view event is streamed, Windows Media Services 9 Series is needed for streaming. If the content will be downloaded, only a Web server is needed. The following tables describe the service and mobile device components you'll need to create a pay-per-view or subscription video service.
Service Components| Component | Description |
|---|
Windows Media Services 9 Series (a service of the Windows Server 2003 operating systems)
| Streams live or on-demand audio and video content over a public or private IP-based network, such as the Internet or an intranet. You can configure and manage one or more streaming media servers that deliver your content to fixed and mobile devices. You can also use Windows Server 2003 to download video files to handsets via Internet Information Server.
For more information, see Windows Media Services 9 Series.
| Windows Media Rights Manager 10
| Protects and securely delivers audio and video content for playback on a computer, portable device, or network device.
For more information, see the Windows Media Rights Manager 10 SDK documentation.
| Windows Media Encoder 9 Series
| Compresses and encodes audio and video content to a Windows Media file or live stream.
For more information, see Windows Media Encoder 9 Series.
| Windows Media Encoder 9 Series SDK
| Enables you to automate the encoding process for custom applications and solutions, and to perform remote encoding.
For more information, see the Windows Media Encoder 9 Series SDK documentation.

Mobile Device Components| Component | Description |
|---|
Windows Media Audio 10 Professional, Windows Media Audio 9, and Windows Media Video 9 codecs
| Decodes the Windows Media-based content and provides other functionality used by the device for playing the content. Also provides the protocols for streaming, as well as Windows Media Services Fast Connect and Fast Reconnect on your device for streamed content.
For more information, see Windows Media 9 Series Codecs—Audio and Windows Media 9 Series Codecs—Video.
| Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices
| Obtains and stores the DRM license, and then decrypts the content. This allows for subscription and pay-per-view content to be distributed to the handset once, and then played as many times or for as long a period of time that you define for the business model.
