General
1.1 What is the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec?
The Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec is a stand-alone codec package that uses our legacy codec interface and provides two key benefits:
The Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec enables encoding enthusiasts who use legacy versions of video-editing applications to encode and decode Windows Media Video 9-based content using file containers such as AVI.
The Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec enables users of Windows Media Player 6.4 to play Windows Media Video 9-based content, in both ASF and AVI file containers.
1.2 What operating systems are supported by the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec?
The Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec is supported on Windows 98 SE, Windows NT 4.0 and later, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP for both encoding Windows Media Video 9 content in legacy editing applications and decoding Windows Media Video 9-based content in Windows Media Player 6.4.
1.3 Is a license required to use the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec?
The Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec installation package includes a click-through EULA during installation, which provides some distribution rights.

Installation and Deployment
2.1 Where can I download the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec?
Windows Media Player 6.4 will now automatically download the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec the first time it attempts to play content that was encoded by using the Windows Media Video 9 codec. If the download fails for any reason, the user can simply download and install the VCM stand-alone package from the Windows Media Download Center.
2.2 How can enterprises enable Windows Media Video 9 VCM playback?
Enterprise customers can deploy the Windows Media Video 9 VCM codec in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) or other software-distribution technology by downloading the VCM stand-alone package from the Windows Media Download Center. However, we continue to recommend that enterprise customers running Windows 2000 or later upgrade all desktops to Windows Media Player 10 using the Enterprise Deployment Pack.
