Portable Audio and Video Devices, Mobile Phones and PDAs
To make your Portable Audio and Video Devices, Mobile Phones or PDAs fully PlaysForSure-verified, we recommend that you integrate the following Microsoft technologies into
your device:
To complete the licensing process you will need to request and execute several license agreements with Microsoft. The detailed steps below will walk you through the licensing
process.
Windows Media Codecs (WMA/WMV)
Fill out this online form and select "WM Components Application (Interim and Final Agreements)."
The Interim Agreement is for those who want to port these codecs to their own platform.
The Final Agreement is required if you will ship devices containing this technology and want to use the PlaysForSure Logo. Royalty payments are applicable to products that ship with
Windows Media Codecs. Please see the "Draft Windows Media Components Final Product Agreement"
(pdf file) for the Royalty Schedule.
wmla@microsoft.com will send you an application and further instructions (1-2 business days).
Complete and return the application electronically.
Once Windows Media Licensing Administration (WMLA) receives your completed form, they will draft the license and send you the draft .pdf agreement via e-mail for your review (3 days).
You will then have the opportunity to review and approve the draft.
Send this draft back to WMLA for the Microsoft approval process (6 days).
Once approved by Microsoft, you will be sent an executable license via e-mail for your signature.
Print 2 originals, complete the license, sign it, and return it via mail courier to PFS Licensing.
Microsoft will review and countersign the agreement (4-7 days).
Microsoft will send you an e-mail, advising that the agreement has been executed, and that one original will be mailed to you for your records. The e-mail will point to deliverables
(i.e. Porting Kit if applicable) (2 days). You will be sent the passwords to access these deliverables in a separate e-mail.
We recommend you take the time to fully understand the terms of this final agreement early in the process so that your license can be processed smoothly. You cannot ship a device with
Windows Media DRM 10 without this final distribution agreement.

Microsoft will send you an e-mail, advising that the agreement has been executed, and that one original will be mailed to you for your records. The e-mail will include a certificate
generation kit and pointers to the compliance and robustness rules.
Complete and return certificate requests as needed at this point.
Once Microsoft has invoiced and received payment of the one-time fee, we will send another e-mail containing the deliverables (3 days).
The e-mail will contain the code and/or the certificates, as applicable.
At this point you will have completed the recommended qualifying agreements. Please note the effective date and the agreement number printed on one of your agreements, as you will
need this information when you complete the PlaysForSure Logo license agreement.
Windows Media Player 11 Software Redistribution
To complete the premium customer experience, afforded through Windows Media DRM 10 and MTP, it is recommended that you distribute Windows Media Player 11 along with your product. There
is no charge for Windows Media Player 11 distribution, but the distribution agreement must be in place. Since you are already in the licensing process, it may be helpful to complete
this optional step at this time.
Fill out this online form and select "WM Player 11 Distribution Agreement."
wmla@microsoft.com will send you an application and further instructions (1-2 business days).
Print two originals, complete the application, sign it, and return it via mail courier to PFS Licensing.
Microsoft will review and countersign the agreement (4 days).
Microsoft will send you an e-mail, advising that the agreement has been executed, and that one original will be mailed to you for your records. The e-mail will electronically point
you to the deliverables (i.e. Windows Media Player 11 software) as applicable.
Now that you have completed all the recommended agreements, it is time to move on to the PlaysForSure Logo License Agreement.
PlaysForSure Logo License Agreement
Please send an e-mail to wmla@microsoft.com with the subject line "Request for PlaysForSure Logo License Agreement
[your company name here]." You must include the following in the e-mail:
Your Microsoft agreement number for your Windows Media Components Final Product Distribution Agreement (codecs) and/or your Windows Media DRM 10 for Devices Final Product Distribution
Agreement.
Your contact information (company name, address, fax, and phone numbers).
A technical contact and a legal contact for your company.
You will be sent the license and instructions within 2 business days of your request.
Sign and return the agreement as instructed.
Microsoft will execute the agreement within 7 business days upon receipt.
Once the agreement is executed by Microsoft, you will receive the most up-to-date versions of the test specifications and self-test kit. Be sure to review and test your device against
the most recent version of this test kit. You will also receive the logo graphic files, brand identity guidelines, PlaysForSure Web site login credentials, and other materials.
Note that you do not have a license to distribute any product with the PlaysForSure logo until your product has been successfully tested by a certified Independent Test Lab (ITL) and Microsoft has executed a completed
Exhibit C of the PlaysForSure Logo License Agreement for each product you wish to distribute as outlined in
Step 3.
Microsoft will only sign and return Exhibit C after your device(s) listed on the exhibit have passed the PlaysForSure testing process described in Step 3.
Option 2: You can port these technologies to your platform yourself, but it will require you to sign additional license agreements with Microsoft. Make sure
to request the interim agreements in the steps outlined above for those components you wish to port yourself.
