Windows Media 9 Series HD via satellite demo at IBC
SES ASTRA, Europe's leading direct-to-home satellite operator, gave a technology demonstration at IBC of Windows Media 9 HD via satellite
SES ASTRA , Europe's leading direct-to-home satellite operator, gave a technology demonstration at the IBC exhibition in Amsterdam of high definition television transmissions via satellite.
The company, which operates the ASTRA Satellite System, demonstrated two HDTV transmissions. One feed used HD material transmitted in MPEG2 MP@HL (Main Profile@High Level). The second feed transmitted using Windows Media® 9 Series HD.
The decision to transmit with Windows Media 9 demonstrated a more economical solution that enables broadcasters to transmit with less bandwidth—as little as 5 to 8Mbps.
"As satellites are ideally suited to manage the higher bandwidth requirements of HD transmissions, SES ASTRA intends to kick start European HDTV distribution," comments Ferdinand Kayser, president and CEO of SES ASTRA.
In an earlier demonstration of HDTV, the company teamed up with Belgium facility Alfacam to transmit the Euro 2004 qualifying match between Denmark and Norway to a number of cinemas in Europe.
