SyncCast and Digital Envoy deliver Digital Rights Management on Terminator 2: Extreme DVD-ROM
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Extreme Edition) was released by Artisan Entertainment in high definition video and full surround sound on a single DVD-ROM
The Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Extreme Edition) two-disc DVD set achieved a world first this summer, when the digitally re-mastered theatrical version of the film was released by Artisan Home Entertainment Inc in high definition video and full surround sound on a single DVD-ROM in Microsoft Windows Media® 9 Series.
The DVD set includes a standard DVD and a second, ground-breaking DVD-ROM that uses Windows Media 9 Digital Rights Management to secure the online distribution of the material. The DVD-ROM provides movie buffs with 5.1 surround sound and rich, quality video that is nearly three and a half times better resolution than standard DVDs.
The Windows Media Digital Rights Management solution has supplied jointly by SyncCast and Digital Envoy technology. Unauthorised replication of digital content has prevented many media companies from issuing high-quality digital goods to consumers via the Internet in the past. In the case of Artisan's Hi-Definition Bonus DVD-ROM release of T2: Extreme DVD, the content is only licensed for distribution in North America, making it critical that territorial rights management be a part of the distribution solution.
"Using Windows Media Digital Rights Management to protect DVD-ROM content presents great opportunities for media companies to distribute goods in new and innovative ways," says Ezra Davidson, vice president, business development, SyncCast. "Our service provides flexible business rules for content providers. As long as users have a valid disc and a North American IP address, they will be issued a license to access the content consistent with the business rules determined by the content owner."
The T2: Extreme DVD contains an abundance of extra features, offered on both the standard DVD and the high definition DVD-ROM. The film itself has been digitally re-mastered frame by frame to make it look better than ever. Extra features include 16 minutes of additional footage, rare behind-the-scenes footage and a special-effects studio.
"SyncCast's DRM packager—based on Microsoft's .NET framework—allowed the movie studio to encrypt the content themselves without having to release unprotected content to third parties," Davidson says.
The SyncCast and Digital Envoy solution offers media and entertainment companies a first-of-a-kind digital rights management solution incorporating territorial rights management technology to address licensing issues and to control content downloads by area.
SyncCast uses Microsoft® Windows Media Rights Manager to build its DRM Solution technology to protect copyrighted materials online and other traditional media, whether they are DVD-ROMs or CD-ROMs. It provides real-time reporting of content licensing and consumption, including the time and date the content was licensed, the country, state and city the content was licensed, and what was licensed, by file name, byte size, or the end user licensing agreement.
SyncCast clients include Lions Gate Films, EMI Music Group, MPAA, CinemaNow, Artisan Home Entertainment, DMX Music, Billboard (VNU eMedia) and Microsoft, amongst others.
The key to the whole process, says Davidson, is the Windows Media 9 Series technology. "The Windows Media 9 codec improves the overall quality by nearly three times that of a DVD, while resulting in a smaller file than MPEG2," he says. "It is better quality, better security and offers more flexibility, giving the studios more options on how they can interact with their customers."
