Security Upgrade (Individualization): In order to use content with a higher security rating, some vendors require that you upgrade your security components in the Windows Media Rights Manager. Microsoft provides this service and no unique information is shared with the content providers or any third parties. When you upgrade your security level, you are sending some information to Microsoft that uniquely identifies your machine for internal tracking purposes. We store this unique machine identifier in a database and keep track of the number of times you attempt to upgrade your security. We may also use this data internally to perform aggregate analysis of the security upgrade service, such as helping to ensure that we have adequate capacity and security to meet the demand for the service. Note that we do not share this unique machine identifier with any other services either internal or external to Microsoft. You also are sending some security information that enables us to deliver the appropriate security upgrade to your machine. None of the security information is stored permanently. We also keep track of which security upgrade files were downloaded to your machine. This information is not used to identify your machine, but to help Microsoft prevent security breaches that could affect legitimate users. The unique machine identifier and the security upgrade file information will be transported and stored in a secure environment that protects against unauthorized access, data corruption or loss, and unwanted use or distribution.
