Microsoft Brings German Soccer Games Live to Mobile Phones Microsoft and DFL (Deutsche Fussball Liga) GmbH are enabling live broadcast of German soccer games on mobile phones and other portable devices. The platform uses the Microsoft® Windows Mobile® operating system as well as Microsoft digital media products such as Microsoft® Windows Media® Video (WMV), Windows Media Audio (WMA), Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM). The live broadcast relies on DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld) standards. To assemble the most advanced mobile TV platform, Microsoft has selected leading technology and services partners. The mobile TV platform will be demonstrated at the CeBIT conference, at the Microsoft display, at Booth A38 in Hall 4. Live broadcast of German soccer games will be shown on mobile phones at CeBIT on Saturday.
“We are delighted to build a strategic partnership with the very famous and successful DFL,” said Jürgen Gallmann, General Manager of Microsoft Germany. “As the world soccer championship will be held in Germany this year, the interest for soccer will continue to increase. The number of fans for the soccer league in Germany has continuously increased over the past years. With this new Mobile TV concept, fans can view their favorite games at any time and anywhere.”
“Our goal is to satisfy the fans,” added Christian Seifert, General Manager of DFL. “Live broadcast of soccer games to mobile phones will provide fans the best entertainment experience. Microsoft provides state-of-the art mobile TV technology and competence and is therefore a good partner for this project.”
The Mobile TV Platform
Microsoft has built the mobile TV platform together with multiple partners: The Berlin-based Condat AG was responsible for the platform integration and the project management. The overall architecture is based on Microsoft Windows Media Server, Windows Media Encoders, Windows Media DRM, and Windows Media Player. The soccer games are broadcast via a satellite uplink. The signal modulation is performed by Harris, and UDCast’s IP Encapsulator enables signal transmission over the DVB-H network. A mobile phone which is combined with a receiving DVB-H card from DibCom displays the live broadcast. The receiver client application is delivered by Penthera.
