Change How You Sort Files in Your Library February 2005
With Windows Media Player 10, you can change the way your digital media files are arranged in the Library feature to match your preferences, making them more accessible. Using the library, you can choose the columns you want to display, the order in which the columns are displayed, and the size of the columns. You can also choose a column to sort items.
For example, to make songs easier to find, you may decide to display only the columns containing the artist's name and the song or video title. Alternatively, you may want to show more complete information, including the copyright, file name, and composer. You can select the columns that suit your preferences from a full list of column heading names.
Different columns are displayed by default in the Details pane, depending on the category you are viewing. For example, columns that are displayed in the Details pane of the All Music category are different than the columns that are displayed in the Details pane of the All Video category, as shown in the following screen shot.

Note The Player must be in full mode (the default) before you change how files are sorted.
To choose which columns are displayed in your libraryIn Windows Media Player, click Library. In the Contents pane, click the category that contains the columns you want to change. Click Library Options, and then click Choose Columns, as shown in the following screen shot. In the Choose Columns dialog box, select the check boxes for the columns you want to display, as shown in the following screen shot. To change the order in which the columns display, select a column name and then click Move Up or Move Down. Then, click OK. - To resize the columns, do either of the following:
To display all of the information listed in each column, click Library Options, click Choose Columns, and then click the Automatically size all columns check box. To resize each column manually, on the Details pane, click next to the heading of the column you want to make longer or shorter, and then move the column boundary to the right or to the left, as shown in the following screen shot.
To sort items using a different column in your libraryIn Windows Media Player, click Library. In the Contents pane, click the category that contains the items that you want to sort. To sort items in ascending or descending order, click the column heading repeatedly. Note To improve performance, Windows Media Player 10 doesn't store information about changes you make to the default method of sorting columns in the library. This means that when you sort by a column and then close and reopen the Player, the library returns to the default sort selection for that category.
