Synchronize Video to Your Portable Media Center

Synchronize Music and Pictures to Your Portable Media Center

February 2005

Using Windows Media Player 10, you can synchronize digital media content such as music, pictures, TV shows, and movies to your Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Center. This article and the accompanying video describe how to set up your Portable Media Center to synchronize automatically. You can also choose to synchronize content manually. For information about setting up manual synchronization, see the Take Your Music and Video with You Web page. Once you synchronize, you can enjoy your content wherever you go.

Before you begin, you must first add your content to the Library feature of the Player. You have a number of options for adding content to your library, including ripping (copying) music from CDs, downloading files from online stores, and adding TV shows that were recorded using a computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition. For more information about adding content to your library, see the Organize Your Digital Media Collection Web page. For information about the file types that the Player can synchronize to your Portable Media Center, see the Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Centers FAQ Web page.

Connecting Your Portable Media Center to Your Computer

Connect your Portable Media Center to your computer with the cables that came with the device. Turn on your computer and start Windows Media Player 10. Then, turn on your Portable Media Center.

As shown in the accompanying video, one end of the connection cable is a standard USB connector, which plugs into a USB connector on your computer.

The other end of the cable has a connector that fits into the Portable Media Center. For details, see the documentation that came with your device.

Configuring Auto Sync

Once you set up automatic synchronization, the Player will synchronize your Portable Media Center whenever you connect it to your computer. By default, the Player will try to synchronize your entire library. If there is too much content in your library to fit on your device, the Player synchronizes your favorite content first. (Your favorite content is determined by factors such as the number of times you have played the content or ratings you have given it.) You can also choose the content you want to synchronize to your Portable Media Center.

To set up automatic synchronization
  1. Connect your Portable Media Center to your computer.
The Device Setup Wizard is displayed.
  2. Check that Automatic is selected.
  3. (Optional) If you want to customize the order in which content is synchronized, select the Customize the playlists that will be synchronized check box.
The Custom Sync Settings page of the wizard is displayed.
    1. Select the check boxes of the playlists you want to synchronize to your Portable Media Center.
    2. Click the arrows to move playlists up or down; the playlists will be synchronized in the order shown on this page.
  4. Click Finish.
The Player begins automatically synchronizing your library to your Portable Media Center.

Once you have set up automatic synchronization, the Player will check for changes in your library and will update the content on your Portable Media Center accordingly.
