Synchronize Music and Pictures to Your Portable Media Center

February 2005

This article and the accompanying video describe how to use Windows Media Player 10 to synchronize video, including TV shows and movies, to your Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Center. For information about the video file types that the Player can synchronize to your Portable Media Center, see the Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Centers FAQ Web page.

Picking a Quality Setting that Works for You

When the Player synchronizes video to a Portable Media Center, it checks the video format, size (height and width), and codec that is used to compress the video. If necessary, the Player converts the video into a format that can be played on your Portable Media Center.

You can adjust the quality settings for conversion, to find the balance between quality and file size that works for you. You can also turn off conversion, although this is not recommended.

To set the quality level for converted video
  1. On the Tools menu of the Player, click Options, and then click the Devices tab.
  2. In the Devices list, click your Portable Media Center, and then click Properties.
  3. Under Video/TV quality level, click Select quality level, and then move the slider to the quality level you want.

Saving Time When Synchronizing

The time required to convert video varies, depending on your computer configuration. A 2 GHz Pentium 4 computer typically converts a video file in real time, which means that a 30-minute video would take approximately 30 minutes to convert. To reduce the time required to synchronize video, background conversion is automatically turned on for video files. This means that conversion occurs before synchronization begins, and the converted files wait in a temporary storage folder until the next time you synchronize.

To check that background conversion is turned on
  1. On the Tools menu of the Player, click Options, and then click the Devices tab.
  2. Click Advanced.
The File Conversion Options dialog box is displayed.
  3. Check that the Allow video files to convert in the background check box is selected.
  4. (Optional) To allocate more of your computer's processing capabilities to background conversion, select the Choose quality over speed when converting video check box.

Checking that Video will Synchronize

This section assumes that you have already set up automatic synchronization (auto sync) with your Portable Media Center. If not, follow the instructions in the article Get Started with Synchronizing Your Portable Media Center.

To check that video will synchronize
  1. In Windows Media Player, click Library.
  2. In the Contents pane, right-click your Portable Media Center, and then click Change Sync Settings.
  3. In the Synchronization Settings dialog box, verify that the check boxes for the All Video playlist and any other playlists that contain videos are selected, and then click OK.
The next time you connect your Portable Media Center to your computer, the videos in your library will be synchronized. As you add and remove files from your library, your Portable Media Center will be updated the next time you synchronize.
