Licensing Windows Media Technologies for Consumer Electronic Devices

As a hardware or software vendor, you can build and distribute consumer electronic devices that incorporate Windows Media technologies. These Windows Media-based Final Products can include portable media players and network devices such as digital media receivers, cellular telephones, and in-car media devices.

Licensing Final Products That Incorporate Windows Media Components

As a consumer electronics manufacturer or hardware vendor, you can distribute Windows Media-based Final Products such as portable audio and video players, set-top boxes, and mobile devices with audio and video capabilities. To do this, complete these licensing steps:
  1. Submit the "Windows Media Components Final Product Agreement." To complete the Microsoft License Request Form, under Select License to Request, click WM Components Application (Interim and Final Agreements).

  2. If you want to use the Windows Media logo (optional), complete a second Microsoft License Request Form. Under Select License to Request, click WM Logo Agreement (Plays, Compatible and/or HDCD). The logo license agreement cannot be obtained on its own; if you want to license the Windows Media logo, you must also request the "Windows Media Components Final Product Agreement" in step 1.

  3. After you complete the license request form, Microsoft will send you an e-mail message that contains a license application form. Complete this form and return it to Microsoft.
  4. Microsoft will create a draft of the license agreement using the information that you provide, and then send you the draft. Review this draft for accuracy and report any errors to Microsoft.
  5. After accepting the draft agreement, Microsoft will send you executable original license agreements for your signature. You should receive these agreements within five business days. Sign and return these original license agreements.
  6. After Microsoft receives your signed copies and countersigns the agreement, you will receive the Plays Windows Media, Windows Media Compatible, and/or HDCD logos (if you completed the optional step 2 above).
     Note   Final Products are sold to consumers and might require royalty payments. You must also submit a royalty report to Microsoft that identifies your Final Products and their distribution quantities. Licensing Final Products That Incorporate Windows Media DRM 10

As a consumer electronics manufacturer or hardware vendor, you can distribute Windows Media-based Final Products incorporating Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices or Networked Devices technology To do this, complete these licensing steps:
  1. Submit the "Windows Media DRM 10 for Devices Final Product Distribution Agreement." To complete the Microsoft License Request Form, under Select License to Request, click WM DRM 10 for Devices Application (Interim and Final Agreements).
    To review a sample of the "Windows Media DRM 10 for Devices Final Product Distribution Agreement," see the Sample Windows Media Licensing Agreements.
  2. After you complete the license request form, Microsoft will send you an e-mail message that contains a license application form. Complete this form and return it to Microsoft.
  3. Microsoft will create a draft of the license agreement using the information that you provide, and then send you the draft. Review this draft for accuracy and report any errors to Microsoft.
  4. After accepting the draft agreement, Microsoft will send you executable original license agreements for your signature. You should receive these agreements within five business days. Sign and return these original license agreements.
  5. After Microsoft receives your signed copies and countersigns the agreement, you will be invoiced for the $10,000 Advanced Payment of royalties. After this payment is received you will receive instructions for obtaining the required device certificates.

Licensing Final Products that Incorporate Microsoft Device Bridge for Windows Media DRM

As a consumer electronics manufacturer or hardware vendor, you can distribute Final Products incorporating Microsoft Device Bridge for Windows Media DRM. To do this, complete these licensing steps:
  1. Submit the "Microsoft Device Bridge for Windows Media DRM Final Product Distribution Agreement." To complete the Microsoft License Request Form, under Select License to Request, click Microsoft Device Bridge for WMDRM (Interim and Final Agreements).

  2. After you complete the license request form, Microsoft will send you an e-mail message that contains a license application form. Complete this form and return it to Microsoft.
  3. Microsoft will create a draft of the license agreement using the information that you provide, and then send you the draft. Review this draft for accuracy and report any errors to Microsoft.
  4. After accepting the draft agreement, Microsoft will send you executable original license agreements for your signature. You should receive these agreements within five business days. Sign and return these original license agreements.
  5. After Microsoft receives your signed copies and countersigns the agreement, you will be invoiced for the Advanced Payment of royalties. After this fee is paid, you will receive instructions for obtaining the required license signing certificates.

Licensing Final Products That Incorporate Windows Media PDDRM Version 1 for Legacy Devices

You can license Windows Media PDDRM version 1 for support on legacy devices that store and play protected content from local hard disks. These legacy devices are Final Products that are available to consumers.

 important   PDDRM was originally developed by Microsoft in 1999 as part of Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) version 1. With the release of Windows Media DRM 10, which can be ported to any device platform, PDDRM has become a legacy technology. PDDRM is not available in source code. PDDRM optimizations are available in object code for the following platforms: TI, SigmaTel, Samsung’s CalmRISC, and a generic port for ARM7.
To license Windows Media PDDRM version 1, complete these steps:
  1. To obtain the Windows Media PDDRM version 1 binaries for your platform, submit the "Windows Media Components Final Product Agreement." Complete the Microsoft License Request Form. Under Select License to Request, click WM Components Application (Interim and Final Agreements).

  2. (Optional) If you want to use the Windows Media logo, complete a second Microsoft License Request Form. Under Select License to Request, click WM Logo Agreement (Plays, Compatible and/or HDCD).
    To review a sample of the "Microsoft Windows Media & HDCD—Logo License Agreement," see the Sample Windows Media Licensing Agreements.
     Note   The logo license agreement cannot be obtained on its own. If you want to license the Windows Media logo, you must also request the "Windows Media Components Final Product Agreement" in step 1.
  3. After you complete the license request form for Windows Media components, Microsoft will send you an e-mail message that contains a license application form. Complete this form and return it to Microsoft.
  4. Microsoft will create a draft of the license agreement using the information that you provide, and then send you the draft. Review this draft for accuracy and report any errors to Microsoft.
  5. After accepting the draft agreement, Microsoft will send you executable original license agreements for your signature. You should receive these agreements within five business days. Sign and return these original license agreements.
  6. After Microsoft receives your signed copies and finalizes the agreement, you will receive download instructions. Follow these instructions to download the PDDRM version 1 binaries.
