Windows Media Porting Kits for Audio Encoders and Decoders
January 2007

Windows Media porting kits make it easy to port Windows Media Audio encoders and decoders to a variety of platforms.

Windows Media Advanced System Format (ASF)

This source code is used for parsing ASF streams and file-based formats. It is designed to deliver multiple content streams using an adaptive time division multiplexed method. There is an ASF reader for decoders and an ASF writer for encoders.

Deliverables include:
  • Applicable specifications.
  • Associated documentation.

Windows Media Voice Encoder/Decoder Porting Kit

The Windows Media Audio 9 Voice porting kit makes it easy for developers to port the Windows Media Audio Voice codec to a variety of platforms. This low-bit-rate codec is primarily targeted for speech content, but performs very well with mixed-mode content that includes both voice and music. In voice mode, the codec takes advantage of the relatively less complicated and narrower frequency range of the human voice to maximize compression. In music mode, the codec operates like the Windows Media Audio 9 Standard codec. Encoded content can be configured to switch between voice and music modes automatically.

This package includes source code needed to encode/decode Windows Media Audio Voice files in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container. This decoder can only decode files encoded using "voice only" mode.

The porting kit includes:
  • Windows Media Audio 9 Voice source code.
This includes the source code that is required to convert 16-bit raw pulse code modulation (PCM) data into Windows Media files, or Windows Media files into 16-bit raw PCM data. It also includes the associated specifications and documentation.
