Windows Media DRM 10 Porting Kits for Portable and Network Devices
December 2007

The Windows Media DRM 10 porting kits are designed to help developers port Windows Media digital rights management (DRM) technologies to portable and network media devices. This technology is designed for devices that need to store and play protected audio and video content. The following porting kits are available:

Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices Porting Kit

The Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices (DRM-PD) porting kit is designed to help developers create portable devices for playback of digital media content protected with Windows Media DRM technology. This includes content packaged by either the Windows Media Rights Manager SDK or Windows Media Format SDK.

Windows Media DRM-PD enables the devices to receive and store DRM licenses and enforce DRM rights and policies locally; for example, maintaining play counts, expiration, and metering information. Licenses can be acquired both through the PC with indirect license acquisition and directly from a content service using direct license acquisition. Examples of such devices include portable media players, mobile phones, and set top boxes for Internet based video on-demand (VOD) and IPTV services.

The porting kit includes:
  • The source code form of Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices.
  • Applicable test certificate.
  • Specifications and associated documentation and libraries in object code form.
  • Media.
  • Printed materials.
  • Online electronic documentation.

Windows Media DRM 10 for Network Devices Receiver Porting Kit

The Windows Media DRM 10 for Network Devices (DRM-ND) receiver porting kit is designed to enable playback of digital media content streamed from a Windows Media DRM-ND transmitter, such as a PC application based on the Windows Media Format SDK or a portable device. This porting kit is designed for devices such as set-top boxes, networked audio-video receivers, digital media receivers, televisions, and automobile head units.

The porting kit includes:
  • The source code form of Microsoft Windows Media DRM 10 for Network Devices.
  • Applicable test certificate.
  • Specifications and associated documentation and libraries in object code form.
  • Media.
  • Printed materials.
  • Online electronic documentation.

Windows Media DRM 10 for Network Devices Transmitter Porting Kit

Device manufacturers that already support Windows Media DRM-PD can use the Windows Media DRM-ND transmitter porting kit to transmit protected content to network devices that can playback the content. Protected content can be streamed to multiple Windows Media DRM-ND receivers simultaneously. This technology is designed for devices such as set top boxes, mobile phones, and portable media players.

The porting kit includes:
  • The source code form of Windows Media DRM 10 for Network Devices.
  • Applicable test certificate.
  • Specifications and associated documentation and libraries in object code form.
  • Media.
  • Printed materials.
  • Online electronic documentation.

Note   To implement Windows Media DRM Network Device Transmitter version 10.02 or later, you must license and receive Windows Media DRM for Portable Devices version 10.08 or later.

MTP for Windows Media DRM Porting Kit

This porting kit is a version of the media transfer protocol (MTP) porting kit that contains necessary extensions to enable it to integrate with devices that support Windows Media DRM-ND for transmitters. It is designed to help developers create and test devices that utilize MTP and function as a Windows Media DRM-capable network device over USB. The porting kit includes the MTP Initiator code that allows the creation of a host device that can interact with MTP Responders.

This porting kit is delivered with the Windows Media DRM-ND transmitters porting kit. If you obtain a license for Windows Media DRM-PD you can request the MTP for Windows Media DRM porting kit. However, it is not included unless you request it. The MTP for Windows Media DRM porting kit is not a stand-alone porting kit.

Microsoft Device Bridge for Windows Media DRM Porting Kit

Device manufacturers can use the Microsoft Device Bridge for Windows Media DRM (MSDB) porting kit to enable devices to protect digital media content not originally in Windows Media format; generate and issue Windows Media DRM licenses; and copy the content to WMDRM-PD devices for playback. MSDB-enabled devices can also protect content not originally in Windows Media format in order to stream the content and issue licenses to WMDRM-ND devices.

The porting kit includes:
  • The source code form of Microsoft Windows Device Bridge for WMDRM.
  • Applicable test-level License Signing Certificate.
  • Specifications and associated documentation and libraries in object code form.
  • Media.
  • Printed materials.
  • Online electronic documentation.
