Obtaining and Signing a Class 3 Digital Certificate A Class 3 digital certificate allows you to digitally sign a file using your company name. This certificate is used for your company verification only. It is not used in the software development kit (SDK) itself. One of the ways Microsoft secures code distribution is through a Class 3 digital certificate and Authenticode, and therefore, the certificate is needed for security purposes.
To obtain and sign a Class 3 digital certificate, complete the instructions below, which are also sent to SDK license applicants. The certificate authorities that are listed on this page are approved by Microsoft, and you can compare the pricing for each.
You will need the following two files, which are sent to license applicants, in order to sign your Class 3 digital certificate:To obtain and sign a class 3 digital certificateObtain a digital certificate from one of the following certificate authorities:
Use the Signcode.exe tool (located in Signcode.zip, which was sent to you from wmla@microsoft.com) to sign/certify the attached Wmla.ocx file (located in Wmla.zip) using the certificate you obtained. You may also sign your files by using the utility supplied by your certificate authority. Important Do not digitally sign an .exe file because Microsoft cannot receive them, even within a .zip file, due to virus checking.
Send the signed file to wmla@microsoft.com. Include your company name in the e-mail message for clear identification. To confirm that your signature is correct, right-click the file, click Properties, and then click Digital Signatures. We will verify your signed file and confirm via an e-mail message.
