Smart Jukebox Features

The Smart Jukebox features in Windows Media Player 10 reduce the hassle of managing even the largest digital media collections. These features give you more control of your playback experience, while reducing the amount of work required to find and organize digital media in your collection.

Windows Media Player Auto Playlists

Auto Ratings and Playlists

Monitor Changes to Your Digital Media Collection Automatically

You can have the Player check for new, deleted, renamed, or moved digital media files in the folders that you specify in the Monitor Folders dialog box. The Player automatically updates the library to reflect the changes.

Play, Sync, or Burn Digital Media Quickly with Auto Playlists

Auto playlists sort your digital media files into collections that you can play back on your computer, sync to a device, or burn to a CD. Over 15 auto playlists are included with Windows Media Player 10 for everything from your favorite weekday music to one CD's worth of tracks ready to burn for the road.

Organize Your Digital Media by Ratings

The Player automatically rates your digital media collection based on your listening and viewing habits—files that you frequently play receive a higher rating in the 1–5 star scale. You can also rate songs yourself in the library, helping your auto playlists focus on your favorite music the more you use the Player.

Media Information (Tags)

Keeping a digital media collection well organized requires "tagging" each file with complete media information (metadata). Previously, this could be a tedious task, especially if you have a large digital media collection. Windows Media Player 10 provides helpful features that automatically update track information.

To have the Player automatically fix or add missing album details (tags) to MP3 and WMA files, you can use the Auto Info options available on the Library tab (on the Tools menu, click Options). This is a great way to fill in missing artist or album names or track numbers. The Player collects 35 different types of media information, including mood, comments, artist photos, synchronized lyrics, and much more. You can also use the built-in tag editor to edit the information yourself, if you like.

Flexible Playback

Crossfading and Auto Volume Leveling

Mix your music DJ-style by using crossfading and auto volume leveling in the Player. For seamless playback, use the crossfading feature to mix the end of one song into the beginning of another. For CD burning, support for automatic volume leveling makes sure songs in your mix are all at the same volume before burning, so you can focus on enjoying your mix instead of grabbing for the volume control.

Full-screen mode is a great way for you to watch videos, enjoy visualizations while listening to music, and view slide shows. Playback controls are hidden when you aren't using them and are instantly accessible by moving the mouse. Read this article to learn more.

Variable Speed Playback

With this feature, you can easily speed up or slow down audio and video content without changing the pitch and tone of the original audio.

Full-Featured DVD Playback

Use Windows Media Player 10 to watch your DVDs on a computer or laptop. A DVD decoder is required, but if you don't have one, you can purchase a decoder by visiting www.wmplugins.com. Windows Media Player 10 lets you skip to specific titles and chapters, play sequences in slow motion, gain access to special features, and switch audio and caption languages. In addition to these conventional DVD player features, the Player can also automatically retrieve information about each DVD from the Web.

Highest Quality Audio and Video

Industry-Leading Audio and Video Quality

Experience the highest quality audio and video at any connection speed with Windows Media Audio and Video 9 Series support. Take advantage of WMA Variable Bit Rate (VBR) technology that can deliver high quality audio at half the file size of MP3 files, enabling you to store more music on a computer, on a recordable CD, or on a host of devices. Windows Media Video 9 delivers the best quality video at the smallest download sizes or streaming speeds when compared to other formats.

Surround Sound

Bring a high-end audio experience to your computer and the Web. The Windows Media Audio 9 Professional technology in the Player supports 24-bit, 96 kHz audio with 5.1—or even 7.1—channel audio as low as 128 Kbps.

Lossless

Attention audiophiles! Rip CDs to the library at archive-quality levels by using the Windows Media Audio 9 Lossless technology built into the Player.

High-Resolution HDCDs

Previously available only on high-end and professional CD and DVD players, the Microsoft–patented High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD) technology delivers full 20-bit playback with HDCD-encoded compact discs. Find out more by visiting the HDCD Web site.

Audio and Video Synchronization

Gain greater control of your playback experience with updated audio and video synchronization capabilities. You can choose whether to keep the audio and video always synchronized when watching videos or whether you want to view every frame regardless of synchronization. This gives you maximum flexibility, especially when playing high definition (HD) content in your home theater.
