Mix Your Music in Playlists (Windows Media Player 10)

February 2005

This article and the accompanying video describe how to create and listen to a playlist of music using Windows Media Player 9 Series.

To create a playlist
  1. In the Player, click Media Library, right-click My Playlists, and then click New.
  2. In Playlist Name, type the name of the new playlist.
  3. In View Media Library by, click the category you want to use to find songs you want to add to the playlist.
  4. Navigate to a song that you want to add, and then click it to add it to the playlist. If you want to select a song that isn't in Media Library, you can also navigate to a folder in Windows Explorer, and drag a song from the folder to add it to the playlist. (To select several songs at once, press the SHIFT key, and then click the songs.)
To add a song to an existing playlist
  1. Click Media Library, and then navigate to the song you want to add. (If the song isn't in Media Library, navigate to the song in Windows Explorer instead.)
  2. Right-click the song, and then click Add to Playlist.
  3. Click the playlist to which you want to add the song.
Note   Your computer must be running Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional in order to be able to add a song to an existing playlist.

To begin playing a playlist
  • In Media Library, double-click the playlist.
To play songs in random order
  1. As the playlist plays, click Now Playing and then click Select Playlist Options Screenshot of the Playlist Options button at the bottom of the Details pane.
  2. Point to Sort, and then click Randomize.

Extending Your Listening Possibilities

You can also use an auto playlist to extend your listening possibilities. Instead of containing a static set of songs, an auto playlist updates dynamically each time you play it.

Windows Media Player 9 Series includes a number of auto playlists. To choose an existing auto playlist, simply expand the Auto Playlist category in Media Library and select one. You can also create your own auto playlist based on criteria that you specify. For example, you might create an auto playlist for your favorite rock music. Or, you might use the Advanced Tag Editor to tag songs with different moods, and then create an auto playlist for each mood.
