Privacy Statement for Windows Media Player 9 Series for Mac OS X
Microsoft is committed to protecting your privacy. This privacy statement applies to Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for the Mac OS® X operating system (Windows Media Player 9 Series for Mac OS X). It does not apply to other online or offline Microsoft Websites, products, or services.
Windows Media Player 9 Series for Mac OS X ("Windows Media Player") does not collect your name, address, phone number or e-mail address. However, there are occasions when other information is transmitted across the Internet. None of this information is used by Microsoft to contact you. The sections below describe these scenarios in more detail.
Playing Streaming Content
When you play streaming content from the Internet, Windows Media Player will transmit various pieces of non-personal data to the content provider's server. The data sent includes certain standard information such as your computer's IP address, the version of Windows Media Player you are using, the operating system, the content played, the date, the network protocol you are using, various parameters of the connection such as its length and the number of packets and a temporary client identification number (client ID). A different client ID is assigned to the Windows Media Player for each stream that you play. This client ID is a random number and is not linked to any personally identifiable information.
Playback of Protected Digital Content
Music or video content that is protected by Microsoft Digital Rights Management technology (DRM) requires a license for playback. When Windows Media Player is asked to play protected content and there is no license on your computer, it will bring up a web browser page for the Internet license server indicated in the content. Most license servers are operated by companies other than Microsoft. You can choose whether or not to download a license to your computer, but Windows Media Player will not be able to play protected content without a valid license. When requesting a license, Windows Media Player will provide the license server certain standard information including your
computer's IP address, an ID for the music or video file, the action you requested (such as play), information about the DRM components on your computer such as their revision and security level, and a digital certificate. This digital certificate is used only to generate a license and, because it is encrypted, is not available to the license server in a way that uniquely identifies your machine.
If you attempt to play a media file that was created with copy protection on a computer running Microsoft Windows, you will be redirected to a Microsoft Website which explains that the file cannot be played on any machine except the one on which it was created. No personal information is supplied to this Website, although the standard information provided to streaming servers listed in the "Playing Streaming Content" section above will be provided.

We may occasionally update this privacy statement. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top of the privacy statement. We encourage you to periodically review the online Privacy Statement to be informed of how Microsoft is protecting your information.
