Real-Time Embedded Controller Makes Offshore Wind Power Reliable

Green Energy Generation Becomes a Reality in North Sea

The wind power industry is booming, driven by global demand for clean, renewable sources of energy. AREVA Multibrid GmbH, a leader in wind power plants, has teamed with Beckhoff, a leader in embedded industrial automation, to solve many of the reliability issues associated with generating wind power at sea. An embedded controller, running Windows® Embedded CE and motion control software, has transformed the Multibrid M5000 wind turbine into a fully automated, self-monitoring energy plant. Windows Embedded CE offers a high-confidence software platform that supports differentiation through innovation and connectivity to enterprise systems. Six M5000 turbines, recently installed in a North Sea test site, reliably and efficiently generate clean energy with predictable service intervals.

Manufacturer Chooses Embedded Operating System for Rugged Next-Generation Device

Based in Germany, manufacturer ads-tec wanted to replace its rugged Tablet device with a next-generation networked indestructible product suitable for all weathers. After a two-year evaluation from 40,000 users of its previous device, ads-tec worked with Microsoft® Authorised Embedded Distributor and Windows® Embedded Partner Elbacom and developed its TT13 Tablet using Windows Vista® Ultimate for Embedded Systems. The choice of operating system resulted from consultation with dozens of users at industrial fairs. They compared a Tablet device running Windows Vista Embedded with a similar product on Linux software. Windows Vista was rated more user friendly than Linux by a users’ test group and ads-tec developers. Due to ongoing support from Elbacom, ads-tec enjoyed fast time to market with its new device, which is also available with Windows® XP Professional for Embedded Systems.

Korea’s Rail Operator Accelerates Sales with Cashless Payments on its Trains

As Korea’s rail operator, Korail has a responsibility to ensure passengers reach their destinations on time and in the greatest comfort possible. The company has worked hard to achieve rapid journeys for its customers, leading to the landmark launch of the KTX high speed trains in 2004. However with cashless payments on the increase in Korea, Korail wanted to embrace this technology on its trains and give passengers further payment options besides cash. The operator decided to rollout devices for card payments running Windows® Embedded for Point of Service as the operating system to support this initiative. This decision has resulted in a ten percent increase in sales, improved efficiency in sales management, and access to business data in real-time to drive future performance initiatives.

Touch-Screen “Frame” is the Next Generation of Home Phone

Connected Media Device is a Connectivity Gateway for the Home
Bringing “always on” broadband connectivity into the home has been a real challenge in countries like Italy, where mobile phones outnumber fixed landlines by a wide margin. Onda has come up with an innovative solution – the Alfred touch-screen frame. Based on the Microsoft® Windows® Embedded CE 6.0 operating system and TI DaVinci processor platform, Alfred enables the convergence of fixed and mobile communications. With 3.5G HSUPA, WLAN, and LAN connectivity, Alfred can use a mobile phone to get on the Web, or make voice-over-IP voice and video calls over a wireless network.
