Giletta, a leading winter-services equipment manufacturer in Italy, partnered with the European Commission to create an intelligent road de-icing system. Salt spreading is essential for winter road safety, but the large quantities of salt required have a high environmental impact and social costs. Giletta's system, based on Windows Embedded, receives weather information from Galileo satellites to provide remarkable improvements in terms of accuracy of the salt-spreading machine's position, allowing for a significant reduction of salt amounts needed for de-icing operations.
Giletta, a leading winter-services-equipment manufacturer in Italy, partnered with the European Commission to create an intelligent road de-icing system that receives weather information from Galileo satellites to conserve natural resources and cut costs that can fluctuate between 60 and 100 euros per ton of salt.
In partnership with the Microsoft Innovation Center of Torino, equipment manufacturer Giletta SpA built an intelligent de-icing solution, based on Windows Embedded CE, Windows Azure and Galileo satellites, that continually compares a truck's salt output against the actual need of the road.
Giletta's solution cut salt consumption by 30 percent. The line-of-business application is built on Windows Azure and can either be hosted on-premises or in the cloud. The solution increased sales to 1,500 trucks annually.
