Windows Embedded Standard SP 1 includes three new technologies:
  1. Remote Desktop Protocol 7.1 (RDP7.1) includes RemoteFX, which is a set of technologies that includes USB Redirection, Multi-media redirection, Multi-monitor support.
  2. SD Boot allows building and installation of Windows Embedded Standard 7 images on SD cards. Customers may boot a Windows Embedded Standard 7 image from an SD card (no roaming) as long as the SD card is in the device enclosure and not easily accessible to the end user.
  3. SKU Compliance Package is added to the image after it is developed. This package deactivates features not in the designated SKU.

Timing of Client OS updates vs. Windows Embedded Standard 7 updates


Windows component servicing for Windows Embedded Standard 7 is now integrated with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 servicing. General Distribution Release (GDR) updates are published on the second Tuesday of each month. Windows Security updates are available for Windows Embedded Standard 7 device updates via Windows Update, while all GDRs are available from the Microsoft Download Center. These same Security and GDR updates are published for OEMs and Distributors on Microsoft OEM Online (MOO) and The Mobile & Embedded Communications Extranet (ECE) websites on the monthly DTOS DVD with applicability described in the Cumulative Update Catalog spreadsheet, also published monthly. MOO/ECE website availability is targeted for the fourth Tuesday of each month.
