Updating your phone to Windows Mobile 6.5

Have you heard about some exciting new features in Windows Mobile 6.5 that you’d like to try (like enhanced web browsing and improved messaging)? And are you wondering if you can update your older Windows Mobile phone to Windows Mobile 6.5? The answer depends on the model of your phone and conditions put in place by your mobile operator (also known as your carrier).

You probably wouldn’t expect to be able to install the latest version of Windows on your old 1990s computer. Similarly, you might not be able to install the newest version of Windows Mobile on your older phone. The following information will help determine if you can update your current phone. If you can’t update your phone, it might be the right time to consider one of the latest models.

If you have a Windows Mobile 5.0 phone

If you have a Windows Mobile 5.0 phone, you cannot update to Windows Mobile 6.5. Microsoft works in partnership with phone manufacturers (for example, Samsung and HTC) to provide updates, but it’s ultimately the decision of the manufacturer whether or not to make version updates for specific phones available to the public.

Although you can’t update from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6.5, you may be able to update to Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1, depending on your current phone and carrier. If such an update is available for your specific phone, the manufacturer or mobile operator will provide it. Be sure to check their web site. If the phone cannot be updated, either because of hardware limitations or because the manufacturer is discontinuing your model, that information should also be available on their web site.

If you have a Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1 phone

In some cases, you can update a Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1 phone to Windows Mobile 6.5 by downloading the update. If an update is available for your specific type of phone, the manufacturer or mobile operator will provide it.

If your phone cannot be updated, either because of hardware limitations or because the manufacturer is discontinuing your model, that information should also be available on their web site.
