How to install an application for your phone from your PC

You install software applications for your phone in one of two ways, depending on how the software is provided to you:
  • The file that installs the program runs on your PC, and you copy the program files from your PC onto your phone; or
  • You copy a "package" of files (in the form of a .cab file--short for cabinet file) from your PC to your phone, and the installation program runs on your phone.
The steps for installing an application from an installation file that runs on your PC are:
  • Connect your phone to your PC with a USB cable.
  • Open ActiveSync on your PC (or, if your PC is running Windows Vista, open Windows Mobile Device Center).
  • Browse online for the application you want to download.
  • Click the button to download.
  • A dialog box opens asking if you want to Open (Run) or Save the software. If you select Open (Run), the application will download, and if zipped, will require you to unzip the program. Every program downloads differently. In most cases, once you click on the download button and select Open (Run), you will go straight to step 6.
  • On your PC, navigate to the folder you unzipped or saved the file to and click on the Setup file.
  • The program will begin the install process. A dialog box will open, asking if you want to install the program to your smartphone using the default directory. If you have a storage card, click No at this screen. Note: Most programs can—and should—be stored on a storage card. The few that must be stored in the main storage on your device will generally let you know this in advance.
  • You'll see a drop-down menu. Click on the drop-down to see your storage choices.
  • Select the type of storage you want to use.
  • The installation will start. When it is complete, check your phone to see if any further steps are required.
  • Click OK.
