Make and receive phone calls |
| Your device enables you to make and receive voice calls and set up conference calls.
You can make voice calls in the following ways: Enter a phone number by using the keypad. Select from a list of contacts saved to your device. Select a phone number saved in your call history. Start entering a number and then select a phone number from the list of recently dialed numbers.

| Make a call by using a recently dialed phone number | |
| Make a phone call while using the media player | If you are listening to music or watching a video on your device and want to make a phone call, you do not have to stop or pause the player. You will not hear any sound from the media file while conducting your phone call. | Tap Start > Phone. Enter the phone number and press the TALK button. After you press the TALK button, the media player will stop playing. After you end the call, the media player will resume playing.

| Add a speed dial number | A speed dial number is a keypad number assigned to a specific telephone number in your Contacts list. You can use this number to dial that person quickly. You can set up separate speed dial numbers for a contact's home, work, and mobile numbers. | Tap Start > Contacts. Scroll to the contact for which you want to set up a speed dial number and press ENTER. If you have entered more than one phone number for the contact, scroll to the phone number for which you want to add a speed dial number. Tap Menu > Add to Speed Dial. In the Location field, scroll up or down to select a keypad number. (Optional: If you skip this step, the device will assign a keypad number automatically.) Tap OK.

| | Save a phone number to Contacts by using your call history | Tap Start > Phone > Call History. Scroll to the phone number you want to save and tap Menu > Save to Contacts. To add a new contact, press ENTER or scroll to the contact to which you want to add the phone number and press ENTER. Enter contact information. In the Number type field, select the phone type for the number you are saving (for example, Work, Mobile, or Home), enter additional information as needed, and then tap Save.

| Mute a call | During a call, you can mute your microphone so that the person with whom you are speaking cannot hear you. However, you can still hear him or her. This is useful if, for example, you do not want the other person to hear a conversation or background noise on your side of the call. | On the phone keypad, tap Mute. To turn off mute, tap Unmute.

| Turn off selected phone sounds | Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Sounds & Notifications. Tap the Notifications tab. In the Event field, scroll to and tap one of the following: Phone: Incoming call Phone: Missed call Phone: Voice mail
Do one of the following: If you select Phone: Incoming call, then in the Ring type field, select None. If you select Phone: Missed call or Phone: Voice mail, clear the Play sound check box.
Tap OK.

| Turn call waiting notifications on or off | You can set call waiting options so that the device sounds a warning when you receive a phone call while you are already on a call. Turning off call waiting notifications disables this warning. | Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone. Tap Services tab > Call Waiting > Get Settings. Tap Notify me or Do not notify me. Tap OK.

| Save a sound file as a ring tone | If you have a sound file saved to the My Music folder on the device, you can set it as a ring tone. You must copy the file to the My Ringtones folder to make it available through Settings, where you can assign it to contacts or use it as a notification. | Tap Start > Programs > File Explorer. Tap My Documents > My Music. Navigate to the sound file that you want, and then tap Menu > Edit > Copy. Tap Menu > My Documents. Scroll to and tap the My Ringtones folder. Tap Menu > Edit > Paste.

| Your phone service may include caller ID, call barring, call forwarding, and other features that you can set up and control. |
| Set up caller ID | You can use caller ID to selectively block who will see your phone number when you call. For example, you can set up caller ID so that only your contacts can see your number. | Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone. Tap Services tab > Caller ID > Get Settings. Tap Everyone, No one, or Only to contacts.

| Set up call barring | Call barring lets you block all incoming calls, but not calls from specific phone numbers. You can also block some outgoing calls when you are roaming outside the local network, if you set up that option before you travel. If you block outgoing international calls, you can set up an exception to enable yourself to make calls to your home country when traveling.
You must set up a call barring password before you start this procedure. | Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone. Tap Services tab > Call Barring > Get Settings. In Block incoming calls, select one of the following: In Block outgoing calls, select one of the following: Tap OK, enter your call-barring password, and then tap OK again.

| Set up call forwarding | If you cannot take calls or do not want to receive certain types of calls, you can set your device to forward incoming calls directly to your voice mail or to another phone number. Forwarded calls will not ring on your device. | Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone. Tap Services tab > Call Forwarding > Get Settings. Select one of the following options (the device will download default settings from the network): Forward all incoming calls to forward all calls to a phone number you specify. No answer to forward calls when your phone is not answered. Unavailable to forward calls when your device is turned off or out of service range. Busy to forward calls when your phone is busy.
For whichever options that you select, adjust the settings as you want and enter the phone number to which you want to forward calls. Tap OK.

| View available networks | If you are out of your mobile operator’s service area, you can view all available networks to find out which mobile operators provide service in your location.

| Set preferred networks | Your device can connect to other wireless networks when it loses the connection to your primary network. Your mobile operator ranks these “preferred” networks in the order in which your device switches from network to network. For example, if the first network becomes unavailable, your device will automatically try to connect to the second network. If the first two networks become unavailable, your device will try to connect to the third network, and so on.
You can change the order of preferred networks, for example, if you prefer the quality of one network to another in a particular location.
Note
You may incur additional roaming charges if you change the order of preferred networks. Before you change the order of preferred networks, it is recommended that you speak with a representative from your mobile operator.
| Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone. Tap Networks tab > Set Networks. In the Network selection dropdown list box, tap Manual, and then tap OK. Settings will be downloaded to your device and a list of available networks will be displayed. Scroll to a network and tap either Move Up to move the selected network up in the list or Move Down to move the selected network down in the list. Tap OK.

| If you have a problem making a phone call, these suggestions may help you resolve the issue. |
| Troubleshoot calling problems | The left column in the following table lists problems that you may experience when you use your device. In the right column, you will find an explanation of what the problem may indicate and the possible solution.
| I entered a phone number, but it was not dialed. |
- Make sure that you have pressed the TALK button.
- Confirm that your connection to the wireless service provider is
switched on and that you are not in a weak signal area such as in a tunnel
or elevator.
- You may have set an outgoing call barring option. Tap Start >
Settings > Personal tab > Phone, and then tap Call
Barring > Get Settings to view or change your current options.

| A caller cannot reach me. |
- Verify that your device is turned on.
- Confirm that your connection to the wireless service provider is
switched on and that you are not in a weak signal area such as in a tunnel
or elevator.
- You may have set an incoming call barring option. Tap Start >
Settings > Personal tab > Phone, and then tap Call
Barring > Get Settings to view or change your current options.

| A caller cannot hear me speaking. |
- Make sure that the call has not been muted.
- Make sure that the device is close to your mouth.

| The audio quality of the call is poor. |
- Adjust the voice volume by pressing up or down on the VOLUME control.
- If you are in a weak signal area such as in a tunnel or elevator, try
moving to another location. If you are in a building, try standing near a
window.

| Calls to and from the device are not connected correctly and are
frequently dropped. |
- Adjust the voice volume by pressing up or down on the VOLUME control.
- If you are in a weak signal area such as in a tunnel or elevator, try
moving to another location. If you are in a building, try standing near a
window.

| You cannot connect, there is no network coverage, or message sending
fails. |
- The network connection has been lost. You may be in a weak signal area
such as in a tunnel or surrounded by buildings. Move to another location and
try again.
- You may be trying to access an option for which you must have a
subscription with your service provider. Contact the service provider for
additional details.

| The bars next to the signal icon disappear. |
- If you have just turned on your device, wait until it finds and receives
a signal from the network.
- You may be in a weak signal area such as in a tunnel or elevator. The
device may be unable to receive the network signal. Move to another location
and try again.
- This may occur when you move between different service areas. It is
normal.
|
| No number is dialed when I call a contact. |
- Confirm that a phone number has been saved for that contact.
- Reenter the phone number for the contact, if it is necessary.
|
|
| Internet calling | Internet calling lets you make calls over the Internet, instead of using the cellular phone system. Internet calling may be preferred when: | You have Internet access and your cellular connection is poor, or you would incur roaming charges. Your workplace provides an Internet calling system that you can use without using cellular minutes. However, if your workplace disables Wi-Fi, you will be unable to make or receive calls using Internet calling. You want to make a call to a number that is available only over the Internet. These numbers appear in Contacts as number@URL or as IP addresses (nnn.nn.nn.nn).
|
| Your Internet Calling settings define your preferences for when to use Internet calling and when to use cellular calling. You can override these settings for individual calls.
Internet calling is available when all of the following are true: | Your phone has an Internet connection, either wireless or through your desktop computer. If you lose your Internet connection during a call, the call will be dropped. Your phone can connect to an Internet calling server. Your Internet calling settings let you make a call. Internet calling can be turned off, restricted to certain times of day, or restricted to times when cellular service is not available.
|
| Tips | Use cellular service if you expect to leave the Wi-Fi area before you finish the call. To save battery power, turn off Wi-Fi if you will be out of Wi-Fi range for a long time.
|
| | Switch phone lines to Internet calling, if it is necessary. Call the number as usual. You can call any number that you can call on your cellular line, plus Internet phone numbers.
|
| Tips | To make an Internet call, you must be connected to the Wi-Fi network you use for Internet calls, and your Internet calling setting must be something other than Never. If you expect to be out of range of the Wi-Fi network before you end the call, use a cellular line instead of Internet calling.
|
| View Internet calling provider and status | Your Internet calling provider and status appear as a line on the Today screen. The status can be any of the following: | Available Internet calling is available but is not the default for the next outgoing call. To use Internet calling for the next call, press and hold the * key. This cycles through line 1, line 2 (if available) and Internet calling. Selected Internet calling is available and is the default for the next outgoing call. Searching The phone is making a connection with the server that provides the Internet calling service. No service The phone cannot connect with the server that provides the Internet calling service. This can occur if there is no active Internet connection, or if the server is unavailable. Not available This means one of two things: If the provider appears as Internet Calling, the phone is not configured to use Internet calling. If any other provider is listed, the Phone setting for Internet Calling is Never.

| Troubleshoot an Internet call | If you cannot call an Internet-only number, make sure that your Internet calling setting is not Never, that your device is set up to make Internet calls, and that you have a connection to the Wi-Fi network that you use for Internet calls. If you receive the message Unable to connect, make sure that you have a connection to the Wi-Fi network that you use for Internet calling, and that you are registered on that network. If you receive the message Unable to complete the call as dialed, verify the number and try again.

Internet calling is available when all of the following are true: | Your phone has an Internet connection, either wireless or through your desktop computer. If you lose your Internet connection during a call, the call will be dropped. Your phone can connect to an Internet calling server. Your Internet calling settings let you make a call. Internet calling can be turned off, restricted to certain times of day, or restricted to times when cellular service is not available.

| Tips | Use cellular service if you expect to leave the Wi-Fi area before you finish the call. To save battery power, turn off Wi-Fi if you will be out of Wi-Fi range for a long time.

| | Switch phone lines to Internet calling, if it is necessary. Call the number as usual. You can call any number that you can call on your cellular line, plus Internet phone numbers.

| Tips | To make an Internet call, you must be connected to the Wi-Fi network you use for Internet calls, and your Internet calling setting must be something other than Never. If you expect to be out of range of the Wi-Fi network before you end the call, use a cellular line instead of Internet calling.

| View Internet calling provider and status | Your Internet calling provider and status appear as a line on the Today screen. The status can be any of the following: | Available Internet calling is available but is not the default for the next outgoing call. To use Internet calling for the next call, press and hold the * key. This cycles through line 1, line 2 (if available) and Internet calling. Selected Internet calling is available and is the default for the next outgoing call. Searching The phone is making a connection with the server that provides the Internet calling service. No service The phone cannot connect with the server that provides the Internet calling service. This can occur if there is no active Internet connection, or if the server is unavailable. Not available This means one of two things: If the provider appears as Internet Calling, the phone is not configured to use Internet calling. If any other provider is listed, the Phone setting for Internet Calling is Never.

| Troubleshoot an Internet call | If you cannot call an Internet-only number, make sure that your Internet calling setting is not Never, that your device is set up to make Internet calls, and that you have a connection to the Wi-Fi network that you use for Internet calls. If you receive the message Unable to connect, make sure that you have a connection to the Wi-Fi network that you use for Internet calling, and that you are registered on that network. If you receive the message Unable to complete the call as dialed, verify the number and try again.

If you can't remember which speed dial number to dial, on the Phone keypad, tap Menu > Speed Dial, and tap the speed dial number next to the contact you want to call.
To dial a two-digit speed dial number, on the Phone keypad, tap the first digit, and then tap and hold the second digit. |
| | When you receive a phone call, you have the option to ignore it. If you ignore the call, the phone will stop ringing and the caller may be sent to your voice mail, depending on your service provider. To ignore a call, tap Ignore. |

| Call Waiting | If you receive a call while in a call, tap Wait to place the call in Call Waiting. |

Use other programs while in a call | You can use other programs on your device during a call. To quickly switch back to Phone, press TALK or tap Phone. Press END to end the call. |

Create a contact from a call | When someone who isn't in your list of contacts calls you, you can create a contact during the call or from Call History by tapping Menu > Save to Contacts. |
| Make a conference call | You can create a phone session between yourself and two or more other parties. | From the Phone keypad, dial the first number, tap Hold, dial the second number, and tap Menu > Conference. To add another party, tap Hold, dial the number, and tap Menu > Conference.
