Voice Command tutorials

Get started with Voice Command! Find out how to use features, personalize Voice Command, and navigate help resources after you have installed Microsoft Voice Command on your Windows Mobile 5.0 powered device.
Be sure that you register your product to get more information about Microsoft Voice Command, future Windows Mobile product releases, and exciting offers for software upgrades and accessories.
To get started, follow these two easy steps:
1. Set the Voice Command Button

Setting the Voice Command button is slightly different depending on if you have a Windows Mobile device with Pocket PC or smartphone software. An easy way to tell is to look at the Today screen and find the Windows Mobile flag. If it is in the top left, you have a Pocket PC. If it is in the bottom left, you have a smartphone.

For the Pocket PC

  • To select a Voice Command button, tap Start > Settings > Buttons.
  • Tap the button you want to assign and select Voice Command in Button assignment.
For the Smartphone

Voice Command defaults to the “record” button. The record button is the button that typically starts the notes recorder application. OEMs implement their own keyboard drivers, and there is no way to know for sure which button is the “record” button. You can try changing the settings by:

  • Press Home
  • Press Start
  • Press More until the “Voice Command Setup” icon is visible and select it.
  • Press Down once on the DPad
  • Press left and right to change the setting
  • On some devices a soft reset is required after changing the setting

2. Try Voice Command

For your first command, try using the Help command to learn how to answer a question. If you have any problems, read the Troubleshooting Web page.

If you are using a Bluetooth headset, press the “Voice Dial” button on the headset. If you are using a button on the device, hold your device about five inches away from your mouth. Press and release the Voice Command button that you assigned. Note: A short melody plays when you press the Voice Command button and a microphone icon is displayed at the top of your screen.

Note: Not all devices implement this the same way. Some devices require that you press and hold. On some devices, pressing and holding will cancel the interaction and play a different shorter melody. Pause briefly, and then say, "Help." After Voice Command finishes telling you the available commands, say, "General."

You can also press the Voice Command button at any time during a question to interrupt Voice Command. If you’re using the Bluetooth headset to conduct an interaction, pressing the button will cancel the current interaction.

You can use Voice Command with Windows Mobile 5.0 powered device. When you use Voice Command, you no longer have to fumble with buttons to do a lot of different tasks on your Windows Mobile 5.0 device. With the Bluetooth headset, you don’t even have to touch the device. Voice Command includes the following voice-controlled features:
  • Hands-free phone
Whether you are walking down the street or sitting at your desk, you can easily display contacts to view an address, phone number, or e-mail address. Place phone calls to people who are in your address book by using your voice Just say "Call Nancy Anderson" to place a call or include "at home," "at work," or "on mobile" if there is more than one phone number listed. Voice Command will even tell you which numbers you have for Nancy Anderson and let you decide.
  • Dial your phone by voice using the phone number
If you need to call a number that is not in your contact list, just say the phone number; for example, "Dial 425 555 0137." Callback or redial the last caller Use "callback" to call the last person who called you and "redial" to call the last person who you called. This simplifies calling people that are not in your contact list.
  • Contact lookup
  • View contacts with a voice command
Voice Command makes it easy for you to view your contacts with one command. If you want to view the details for a contact named Nancy Anderson, say "show Nancy Anderson."
  • Have the subject, time, and location of upcoming appointments read to you
As you are running out the door, you can easily have Voice Command read the details of your upcoming appointments out loud.
  • Check the time and location of your next appointments by saying, "what are my appointments."
You can ask about your next appointment by saying, "what is my next appointment." You can also have Voice Command read your appointments for tomorrow by saying, "what are my appointments tomorrow."
  • Media player
Use your voice to choose the music that you want to play from your collection by album, artist, or genre. You can select the music that you want to listen to the way you think about it. You can even ask Voice Command to "play everything" in your entire music collection, turning your Windows Mobile 5.0 device into your personal DJ.

If you are listening to new or unfamiliar music, you can ask "what song is this," and the name of the song and artist will be read to you.
