Delete files from your phone

As you would with an old laptop or computer, you’ll want to delete any of your personal information and files before selling, giving away, or recycling an old phone.

  • Back up any personal information on your phone because there will be no way to restore this information after you have cleared the main memory. Copy data, such as contacts, e-mail and text messages, documents, personal settings, browser favorites, and any other program preferences you might have to your personal computer or another device.
  • Remove the SIM card and storage card from the phone.
  • Clear the main memory on the phone by going to Start > Settings > System tab > Clear Storage. Follow the on-screen instructions to clear the memory.

Note

If you encrypted any data to a storage card with this phone, be sure to copy that data from the storage card before you clear the main memory on the phone. You cannot access old encrypted data after you’ve cleared the main memory.

Tips

  • Your mobile operator may be able to transfer your personal information from your old phone to a new one and dispose of the old phone for you. Contact your mobile operator for more information.
  • If you are getting rid of the phone yourself, you might consider donating or recycling it.
