If the DHCP Client service on the computer is not running

The Windows Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Client service is used to assign an IP address for device-to-computer communication. If this service is not running correctly on your computer, ActiveSync cannot start device-to-computer communications. To correct this, follow these steps:

Before you begin

  • Check the device display for any messages and respond to them before continuing.
  • Ensure that the computer and the device are set up to use USB connections for ActiveSync:
    • In ActiveSync on the computer: On the File menu, click Connection Settings and select the Allow USB connections check box.
    • In ActiveSync on your device: Click Menu > Connections and select the Synchronize all PCs using this connection check box.

To start the DHCP Client service:

  • Make sure that you have logged on as a member of Administrators group on the local computer. If you cannot log on with this level of privilege, see Switching the USB connection protocol.
  • Open the Computer Management tool:
    • Click Start.
    • Click Control Panel.
    • Double-click Administrative Tools.
    • Double-click Computer Management.
  • In the console tree, under Services and Applications, click Services.
  • In the details pane, click DHCP Client.
  • On the Action menu, do one of the following:
    • If the service is not started, click Start.
    • If the service is already started, click Restart.

To set the DHCP Client service to start automatically:

  • Right-click the DHCP Client service and click Properties.
  • Click the General tab.
  • Set Startup type to Automatic. After the device finishes acquiring an address, the device should connect successfully. You may need to disconnect and reconnect the device USB cable to connect successfully.
