Add birthdays and anniversaries to Contacts and have Calendar remind you about them

The more information you add to your Windows phone, the more useful it will be. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses will help you get in touch with your contacts. But did you know that you can also add birthdays and anniversary information for your contacts—and that your phone will remind you about them? Here's how you add that information.

Note  Steps may vary slightly depending on your phone and your mobile operator.

On a touch screen phone with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, follow these steps:

  • Tap Start, then tap Contacts.
  • Locate the contact entry you want to add the information to.
  • Tap Menu, and then tap Edit.
  • Scroll down to the Birthday or Anniversary field—it will be near the bottom.
  • Tap the Birthday field, and enter the date. Repeat, if necessary, for the Anniversary field.
  • Tap OK in the upper-right corner to save the changes.
  • Re-open the contact to verify that the information has been added.

On a non-touch screen phone with Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, follow these steps:

  • Click Start, and then click Contacts.
  • Locate the contact entry you want to add the information to.
  • Click Menu, and then click Edit.
  • Scroll down to the Birthday or Anniversary field—it will be near the bottom.
  • Press the directional pad to toggle the Birthday field to active, and enter the date. Repeat, if necessary, for the Anniversary field.
  • Click Done to save the changes.
  • Re-open the contact to verify that the information has been added.
The next time you synchronize with Microsoft Office Outlook on your PC or with your Microsoft Exchange Server, the contact information will be updated. By default, the reminder time for birthdays and anniversaries is midnight, and you receive notice of the event 15 minutes ahead of time. That's not a very practical time of day to receive notice—especially if you plan to buy that person a birthday present. If you'd like to change the reminder time to a more practical one, find the reminder in your calendar, click Menu, and then click Edit, and you can change the reminder time.
