In January 2009, the Live Search team
released an updated version of their Windows Mobile software that adds a few cool new features—and with spring break upon us, I figured it was a good time to tell you what's new, and how you can use this program to get the most out of your spring break vacation.
I’m using a Samsung BlackJack II running Windows Mobile 6.1.
First off, the Live Search for mobile software is a free download—fire up
Internet Explorer Mobile on your Windows Mobile
smartphone
and go to
http://wls.live.com. Select the
Download link, and then select the version that matches your
phone: Windows Mobile 6, Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 2003, or Windows Mobile 2003 SE.
Follow the instructions to install the software, and then start it up. One word of caution: Make sure you
have a good data plan before using this application—or it could get expensive. Live Search for mobile accesses online information at your request
and you'll find it fun to use as often as you can.
As soon as you start it up, you should see one of the new features in action: the new location detection. By
using cellular tower locations, the Live Search for mobile application can figure out where you are. It takes a few
seconds, but the highlighted "Locating" bar should vanish shortly after you start up the program, and your location
should be displayed. It's not quite as accurate as getting a GPS fix from your location, because it can get
confused about where the closest cellular tower is, but it's close enough for most things and, best of all, it
works indoors. Previously, with a GPS-enabled phone, if you wanted to do location-based searches, you'd
have to go to a window, or possibly outside, and wait several minutes for the GPS receiver on your
smartphone to get a fix. This was a time-consuming process and—let's face it—pretty awkward if you're with other people
and trying to figure out where you want to go next. No one wants to say "Let's just wait for my GPS to get a fix…"
