Record the New Year’s resolutions of family and friends for hours of fun !

Usually I’m not real big on New Year’s resolutions. Not that it matters to the larger world. The inevitable, “What’s your New Year’s resolution?” is a common query this time of year.

Though I can understand the idea of starting fresh with the new year, it seems a bit arbitrary and forced to me, as if the stroke of midnight can magically overcome the inertia of a lifetime. Besides, grandiose pronouncements of future achievements—and let’s face it, they’re often unrealistic— can’t help but set you up for disappointment and embarrassment come early Spring.

Still though, if there’s embarrassment to be had, better to manage it so it falls where it belongs: at the feet of my family and friends. This year I’m resolving to use Windows Mobile to its fullest to simplify my life—that, and world peace.

This year, when asked about my New Year’s resolutions, I’ll simply pull out my phone and turn the tables on the would-be inquisitor.

“Oh, thanks for reminding me. I wanted to record everyone’s resolutions this year. Won’t that be fun? I just learned how to record video on my new phone. You don’t mind letting me practice.”

Depending on the setting, amount of liquor involved, and personality of the subject, varied and amusing recordings should ensue. Being a kind soul, I’ll prod them from their initial shock, before they can say no.

“OK, so give me your resolutions. One for something you want to improve about yourself, and one for how you’re going to improve the world in general. Action!”

Not only will this create cherished memories, but by acting as videographer I can hide behind the lens and maybe even avoid answering the silly question myself. Now that’s leveraging technology in a useful way! By the time January 2 rolls around, I’ll have a storehouse of clips to evoke memories, measure progress, or hold for ransom.

Video recording tips and tricks

Follow the tips below to record video snippets of your family’s and friends’ New Year’s resolutions using your Windows Mobile phone.

Note

Although most Windows Mobile phones work pretty much the same, be sure to check your phone’s user guide for device-specific details.

Record video

  • On the Home screen, click Start > Video Recorder.
Start menu with Video Recorder selected.

  • Frame the person or thing you’re filming, and then click Enter to start recording.
Start menu with Video Recorder selected.

  • Click Enter again to stop recording.
After you capture the video, the Review screen appears. The screen displays buttons for your next action: Back (camera icon), Delete (trash icon), Send (envelope icon), or View (magnifying glass icon).
Review screen with Back button selected.

Specify review duration

You can specify how long the review screen is displayed, if at all, before your video is automatically saved and you are returned to the Capture screen.
  • Click the left soft key from the Video Recorder screen to access the Capture Mode settings.
Video Recorder screen with Capture Mode button selected.

  • Scroll to the Advanced Settings, and select Review Duration.
Advanced Settings screen with Review Duration selected.

  • Select the desired time for review before the video is saved and you are returned to the Video Recorder screen.
Three-second Review Duration setting selected on Advanced Settings screen.

Set other video options

Depending on your device, you can also specify other things, such as a video effect (grayscale and sepia, for example), white balance (day or night), resolution, and capture format. Refer to your manual for device-specific details.

Transfer video to your PC

After capturing video, you need to get it to your computer—for storage, editing, or uploading to social networking sites. Synchronizing your phone to your computer transfers video files according to settings you specify in Windows Media Player Mobile.

Because video takes up a fair amount of space, you’ll want to actively manage where you store video files. Store all your video files on your computer, and keep just your favorites on your mobile phone.

In Windows Media Player on your computer, use playlists to organize your videos and determine which ones are synchronized. All video files on your phone are automatically transferred to your computer when you synchronize your phone to your computer; however, you have to specify which files from your computer you want transferred to your phone.

Note You need at least a 32-megabyte (MB) or larger storage card in your mobile device to sync media files.

To specify video sync settings:

  • Start Windows Media Player on your computer.
  • Click the Sync tab, and then click Set up Sync.
Windows Media Player Synchronization Settings screen.

  • Select the playlists you want to sync. For example, you may want to sync only those videos that you’ve rated with four or five stars.
  • Click OK. The next time you sync, the videos (or any media playlists) you specified will automatically sync.
Tip

Review these Windows Media Player Mobile basics for more information on working with playlists and to make sure you’re getting the best performance for your videos.
