Stay connected during summer vacations

The MSN weather site, customized for mobile phones

Whether your summer plans include a vacation or the recession-proof “stay-cation,” your Windows Mobile phone can help you make the most of your time off. For those headed out of town, the phone is a perfect tool for planning and executing your trips. It can even entertain you as you travel. For those of us saving some cash and exploring the wonders around our own corners, the phone can help us seize sudden opportunities and connect with friends on the fly.

I’m making my summer plans with the Palm Treo Pro, running Windows Mobile 6.1, with service from Sprint.

Get out of town

Most people know that you can check airline web sites to ensure that your flight is on time or visit state transportation sites for traffic conditions before you head out on a trip. A savvy subgroup might also know that you can both check in and print your boarding passes up to 24 hours in advance of your flight.

But did you know that some airlines allow you to use your Windows Mobile phone to check in ahead of time and then print your boarding pass at the airport kiosk?

Many globe-trotters have also pointed out that your Windows Mobile phone can be a source of entertainment on your trip—especially if you’re traveling with kids who like to play with games, themes, wallpapers, and ringtones. Looking for more of these extras? Visit Insider, and download games and other software to your phone either beforehand or when travel fatigue sets in.

You can also research your destination using the offerings from MSN, all with content optimized to fit the smaller screen of a phone.

  • From the Today screen, tap Internet, and then enter MSN in the address bar. (You can also save this to your Favorites and save a step.)
    MSN mobile home page

  • Enter the name of the city or country of your choice in the search box.
Windows Live map of Houston, Texas

You can check the weather, general maps, and traffic maps, in addition to locating public transportation and the business hours of, locations of, and directions to all the destinations you’re intending to visit during your stay.

Stay close to home

Even if you’re on familiar turf, your phone can enhance your time off.

Just last week, I was enjoying the variety of things going on in and around my home town, and I made an impromptu decision to check out a local restaurant that I read (using my phone, of course) was offering Basque cuisine. I was open to company, but I didn’t want the hassle of coordinating a group of people, so I simply posted my plans to Facebook from my phone as I walked down the street.

In no time at all, I received texts and calls by like-minded folks and was able to share a spontaneous meal with people I almost never get to see in the course of the work-a-day world.

At some point during my time away from the office, I realized that I’d forgotten to update my Out of Office message to include my mobile number. But, because all the Windows Mobile phones are loaded with Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile, I was able to regain my peace of mind within seconds, by adding my mobile number on the fly.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Open Outlook on your Windows Mobile phone. I can access mine both through the calendar that I have on my Today screen and through the New Messages, also on the Today screen.
  • Click Menu, click Tools, and then click Out of Office.
Out of Office… selected on Tools menu in Calendar

  • Add your Out of Office message, change settings as needed, and then select Done.
Now I was reachable in case of emergency. But they’d have to leave a voice message, because I wasn’t picking up on the first ring.

Whether your summer downtime takes you to the other side of the world or the other side of town, you can use your phone to enhance your adventures or to keep your business clients at bay. Whatever you do, you can relax this summer and let your Windows Mobile phone contribute to your good times!
