Business Situation
HiChina had been using Web server computers based on both Linux and the Windows Server 2003 operating system to host solutions for its customers. The company used Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6.0, a Web platform for applications and services, to host customer Web sites. Each HiChina Web server computer hosted approximately 150 dynamic customer Web sites based on ASP.NET. However, HiChina had been experiencing performance and reliability issues. These problems were particularly concerning because HiChina customers had been increasingly demanding Windows-based Web hosting services. HiChina sought a new solution that would provide increased reliability and performance.
Solution
In July 2007, HiChina deployed the Windows Server 2008 operating system on four of its server computers. This deployment included Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, a new server for hosting Web applications and services. HiChina also took advantage of the Server Core installation option of the Windows Server 2008 operating system, which makes deployment easier by giving administrators the ability to install only the operating system components needed for a specific workload.
