Windows Server x64 Case Studies

With the ever-increasing adoption of the x64 platform, customer success stories are being published on an ongoing basis. In fact, many of the Windows Server 2008 case studies published already involve x64 systems.

While the x64 versions of Windows Server 2003 R2 were explicitly named as such, Windows Server 2008 is x64 by default. Because the product name "Windows Server 2008" refers to the x64 version of the product, not all case studies involving x64 solutions explicitly mention that fact.

The case studies listed below have a special emphasis on x64. Please see www.microsoft.com/casestudies for others.

Engineering Firm Boosts Performance and Scalability with 64-bit Operating System - 05/08/2007
Grontmij, based near Amsterdam, the Netherlands, provides design and engineering services related to water, the environment, and civic systems. The company employed approximately 4,000 people until August 2006, when it added about 3,000 employees through a merger. The increase in head count created service interruptions, an increase in server issues, and slower application response times—especially for e-mail. After conducting performance tests, Grontmij decided to gradually deploy Windows Server® 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition. The company found the initial deployment to be trouble-free, despite industry rumors about application compatibility issues and a lack of native drivers. System performance and employee productivity have both increased. In addition, Grontmij has improved scalability and lowered the total cost of ownership in the data center by 50 percent.

Costa Rica’s Central Bank Uses 64-Bit System for Greater Performance, Reliability - 05/11/2007
TDC is Denmark’s leading provider of fixed, mobile, and data communications services. The company’s complex server environment had more than 2,000 servers running seven operating systems. TDC Services recognized that a homogenized server environment would be more cost effective and easier to maintain. To achieve this, TDC replaced 48 of its file servers with two clusters of five 64-bit servers and chose Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition as the new file server, which, in the project’s first phase, replaced more than 50 machines.

Czech Transportation Agency Improves Efficiency with 64-Bit Enterprise System - 06/01/2007
Dopravní podnik Ostrava (DPO) is a public transportation agency serving the citizens of Ostrava in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. The IT infrastructure at DPO includes NORIS, an enterprise resource planning system used for tasks such as creating schedules and reports and managing passenger ticketing. Agency employees grew increasingly frustrated with the performance of the system, which was originally deployed in a 32-bit computing environment. The IT staff decided to migrate NORIS to a 64-bit system using the Windows Server® 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition operating system and Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 database software running on IBM System x3800 server hardware. The 64-bit solution has dramatically reduced the time it takes to perform daily tasks. And its stability is freeing up time for IT staff to devote to projects that will deliver more value to the agency.
