Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Editions System Requirements

Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 editions are well-suited to high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, Terminal Services, Active Directory data stores larger than 2 gigabytes (GB), databases, business applications, Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0, and memory-bound applications.

Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 editions require either AMD processors with AMD64 technology or Intel processors with Intel 64 architecture (formerly known as EM64T). These processors have been available for several years, and the vast majority of new servers shipping today from major vendors contain these processors. The processors are capable of running either 32-bit Windows Server or Windows Server 2003 x64 editions.

The best way to take full advantage of today’s x64 server hardware is with a solution built on a Windows Server x64 edition.
