This IDC white paper presents the results of a study conducted to determine the total cost of ownership (TCO) for six common workloads, including Web, file, print, networking, security, and e-mail, on three Microsoft server operating environments (Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows Server 2003). The results of this study are presented in terms of a three-year TCO for 100 supported users.

The study was conducted through in-depth qualitative interviews across 156 large organization sites located in North America. In the vast majority (83 percent) of the cases, organizations use more than one of the Microsoft server operating environments being evaluated. This enabled IDC to collect directly comparable data from the two or three respective environments where other factors were relatively constant. This improves the quality of the cost data and analysis performed for this study.
