Microsoft Windows Server was the top-selling server operating system in 2005, according to leading IT industry analyst firm IDC. Windows Server generated $17.7 billion in revenues, ranking Windows Server over UNIX for the first time in overall server operating system sales.

The market data was compiled by IDC for the Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, a quantitative tool for analyzing the global server market on a quarterly basis. This data was collected through analysis of quarterly shipments and revenues, segmented by vendor, family, model, region, operating system, price band, CPU type, and architecture.

Results show that Windows Server demonstrated solid growth for the year 2005. For the fourth quarter of 2005, Windows servers accounted for $4.9 billion, representing 33.6 percent of quarterly server market revenue. Areas highlighting this growth included servers in support of scalable enterprise workloads—the ability of a server to continue to function well when workloads change in size or volume—as well as server virtualization.
