General Product Questions

Q.What is Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2?
A.

Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (SBS 2003 R2) is an upgrade release to the award-winning SBS 2003 product. It provides enhancements to the core product technologies integrated into SBS 2003 and adds new features to address the growing needs of small businesses. As with SBS 2003, the new release will be available in Standard and Premium Editions.

Q.What are the differences between the Standard and Premium Editions?
A.

SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition offers increased productivity and functionality with automated network-wide patch and update management, increased mailbox limits to 75 GB, and expanded client access license (CAL) rights. SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition will include the features and functionality of SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition in addition to providing improved database and firewall technologies, as well as tools for developing Web pages and Web server applications. See a comparison chart of features here.

Q.What are the expanded CAL rights in SBS 2003 R2?
A.

Customers running SBS 2003 R2 can use their CALs to access additional servers running Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition on the SBS 2003 R2 network. See the licensing questions section for additional information on SBS 2003 R2 CALs.

Q.Why is SBS 2003 R2 a great purchase for my business?
A.

SBS 2003 R2 is the ideal first server for new customers looking for a cost-effective solution, or as a product upgrade for existing customers seeking to upgrade or improve their competitive advantage. With new patch and update management, improved security and availability, and unique-to-SBS wizards and consoles, SBS 2003 R2 is the obvious choice for a high-value, low-cost IT solution.

Q.When will SBS 2003 R2 become available?
A.

The English and German versions of SBS 2003 R2 are available as of July 11. Localized languages will follow within 60 days.

Q.I heard SBS 2003 R2 was recalled. What was the problem, and has it been fixed?
A.

During a regular audit of the released-to-manufacturing Windows SBS 2003 R2 media (CDs and DVDs), Microsoft discovered that some product non-final versions had been included. These issues do not affect server stability, data integrity, or compromise system security; however they do affect the ability to apply, over the life of the server, automatic updates (from Microsoft Update to the server running SBS 2003 R2). Therefore SBS 2003 R2 product was recalled and re-released. The number of units involved is small, and Microsoft expects the re-released product will be available to partners and customers in mid-September. If you have a server running SBS 2003 R2 today, please contact the Microsoft partner, system builder, or OEM who supplied you with SBS 2003 R2 for information on how to upgrade your server. For more information on the issues, please see the following Knowledgebase articles:

Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2: Update to Exchange Server 2003 SP2.

How to Upgrade to the Final Released Version of SQL Server 2005 in Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2.

Q.Will SBS 2003 R2 be available as a free update like SP1?
A.

No. The software is available through normal purchasing channels, such as your IT consultant or software reseller. When you purchase SBS 2003 R2, you will receive the appropriate media for your edition. See the Pricing and Licensing section for information on how to purchase SBS 2003 R2.

New customers are also encouraged to participate in the SBS 2003 R2 Technology Upgrade Program – please visit http://www.microsoft.com/sbsr2tup for details.

Q.How is Windows Server Update Services in SBS 2003 R2 different from the download available on Microsoft.com?
A.

WSUS is available as a free download and can be installed on existing SBS 2003 networks today. However, there are unique-to-SBS setup, administration, and reporting tools that are not available in the standalone product. The additional tools generate the necessary settings, files, and permissions, without requiring you to configure the system on your own. WSUS also provides you with daily reporting as to the software health of your network, integrated into the existing system health reports that are unique to SBS 2003 R2. None of this is available with the standalone WSUS product.

Q.How many employees is SBS 2003 R2 suitable for? When would you recommend a more robust solution?
A.

SBS 2003 R2 is targeted at businesses with up to 75 users or devices. When a business gets close to the upper limit of 75 users or devices, it’s time to consider moving to the standalone versions of the SBS product technologies: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition, and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. These solutions will run on midsize hardware (four processors, 4 GB RAM for Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition) and are capable of intricate Active Directory configuration and management functions. If a customer has invested in SBS 2003 R2 and is at or near the 75-user or -device limit, consider investing in the SBS Transition Pack, which allows them to convert to standalone versions of the software and move to hardware that will scale with the workload. For more information on the Transition Pack, visit http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/techinfo/planning/transition.mspx.

Q.With Windows SBS 2003 R2, must all PCs have the latest version of Office?
A.

Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is linked to the Microsoft Update Web service, so WSUS can only update operating system and application versions that are supported by Microsoft Update. The earliest versions supported are Windows 2000 Professional and Office XP, so it is definitely worth upgrading your desktops to WSUS-supported configurations. The optimal configuration would be desktop PCs running Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003. In addition, depending on what features you want to use with SBS 2003 R2, you will want to upgrade to the latest versions. If you want to take advantage of team workspaces, version control, or other SharePoint features, you must use Office 2003 or later. Note that SBS 2003 R2 comes with Outlook 2003 , so your employees can already take advantage of a powerful e-mail application without requiring a desktop upgrade.

Q.Does SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition include a firewall?
A.

SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition includes the standard firewall services found in Windows Server 2003 and adds simplified management and administration tools unique to SBS 2003 R2. For customers who need granular control over Internet usage and employee access, ISA Server 2004 is available in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition. Get more information about the offerings of both editions of SBS 2003 R2.

Q.Do I need to purchase an e-mail client to work with the Exchange Server 2003 component in SBS 2003 R2?
A.

No. Both editions of SBS 2003 R2 include Outlook 2003 technology so all your employees can send and receive e-mail at no additional cost. Each SBS 2003 R2 client access license (CAL) allows either one user or one device to run a copy of Outlook 2003.

Q.Does SBS 2003 R2 include Microsoft Shared Fax Service?
A.

Yes. SBS 2003 R2 includes Microsoft Shared Fax Service. For more information about the offerings of both the standard edition and the premium edition, see Features at a Glance.

Q.Will the SQL version in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition be SQL Server 2005? Will it include a subset of Visual Studio 2005 to permit the creation of applications that are interoperable with MS Office?
A.

SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition includes SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition technology. This means you will have access to Management Studio (a subset of Visual Studio), Report Services and Report Builder that will help you build custom SQL Server applications and reports. You can then make this information available on the SharePoint intranet Web site, build new Web pages or Web parts using FrontPage 2003 – also included with Premium Edition – or simply publish reports on the site for use with Microsoft Office products such as Excel. With these tools working together with SharePoint, you can quickly generate information views (such as daily individual sales reports) that help you run your business better and faster.

Q.Can I use an earlier version of Outlook in place of Outlook 2003, which comes with Windows Small Business Server 2003?
A.

Yes, you can use any earlier version of Outlook instead of Outlook 2003. A Windows Small Business Server 2003 CAL entitles each user or device to use Outlook 2003 or any previous version.

Q.I have Mac Clients on my SBS network. What do I use in place of Outlook?
A.

SBS customers that have MAC clients may use Entourage in place of outlook on the MAC client.

Q.How do I get the media for Entourage?
A.

There are 2 ways to acquire the media for Entourage.

Entourage is included in the volume license disk kit available for SBS.

Retail and OEM customers do not receive any Entourage media and may order a media deliverable through their Microsoft customer service center. The part number for this fulfillment media is Q56-00232 Entourage Mac 2004 Mac English Disk Kit CD. In the United States contact (800) 360-7561, Monday - Friday, 5:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M. Q.What is Windows Server for Small Business Server?
A.

Windows Server for Small Business Server (WSfSBS) is an operating-system only product based on SBS 2003 with Service Pack 1. It does not include any other applications, wizards, or integration tools that are found in the full SBS 2003 R2 product. WSfSBS has the same Active Directory limitations as SBS 2003 R2 (must be the root domain controller in the forest, does not support trusts, cannot move the FSMO roles) and has an additional limitation of only 15 SBS CALs. Lastly, there are no supported upgrade paths, either to SBS 2003 R2 or to Windows Server 2003 R2.

Q.What are all the product technologies in SBS 2003 R2?
A.

See the comparison chart here listing which product technologies are included in each edition.

Q.Does SBS 2003 R2 include all the components of Windows Server 2003 R2?
A.

No. The core Windows Server 2003 technologies are available in SBS 2003 R2, but many of the enhancements in Windows Server 2003 R2 are designed for medium- to large-sized businesses. By the time most small businesses require those technologies, such as an enterprise-class branch office infrastructure management, their IT needs have exceeded the capabilities of SBS 2003 R2. What is important to remember, however, is that key technologies from the Windows Server family have been added to SBS 2003 R2, including Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) and SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2. SBS 2003 R2 customers can easily receive those technology benefits without requiring a significant investment in their IT infrastructure.

Q.What is the difference between SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition and SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition?
A.

A chart listing the new features available in SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition and included in SBS 2003 R2, along with related questions, can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/sql2005.mspx.

Q. Where can I get further information about SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition?
A.

For additional information about SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition, see http://www.microsoft.com/sbs/evaluation/faq/sql2005.mspx.

Q.Are applications designed for SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition compatible with SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition?
A.

Most applications designed for SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition will be compatible with SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. However, it is important to review the backward compatibility documentation for SQL Server 2005 (available here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143232.aspx). Thoroughly test your application in a test environment with SQL Server 2005 before upgrading your existing application to SQL Server 2005.

Q.How does Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) work?
A.

WSUS centralizes update and patch management services onto one server. It stores the patch files in its own database, so the patches only have to be downloaded from the Internet once. Instead of each employee downloading software from Windows Update or Microsoft Update manually on each individual’s computer, updates are stored on WSUS and then automatically pushed out to each computer. Most important, WSUS deploys patches and software updates to computers and servers on your network. A daily report is created, showing you a “green check” when all updates are successful or detailing which ones may have other installation requirements.

Q.Where does WSUS obtain its files?
A.

The downloadable files are obtained from Microsoft Update. WSUS pulls the updates from Microsoft Update automatically.

Q.What server products are supported by WSUS on SBS 2003 R2?
A.

WSUS currently supports updates for Windows Small Business Server, Windows Server, Windows SharePoint Services, Exchange Server, and SQL Server. SBS 2003 R2 can push patches to other servers running these products on your network.

Q.Are there any service packs that WSUS does not install automatically?
A.

WSUS does not install Service Pack 1 for Windows SBS 2003 or the service packs for Exchange Server 2003. These service packs contain substantial changes and improvements to key services, and should be tested before installing them on production servers.

Q.Can I purchase or use SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition with SQL 2000 Standard Edition instead of SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition?
A.

No. However, you may purchase a license for SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition and request “downgrade” rights to SBS 2003 SP1 Premium Edition, which includes SQL 2000 Standard Edition. You can then run SBS 2003 SP1 and SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition. If you later decide to move to SBS 2003 R2, you must upgrade all the product technologies to the SBS 2003 R2 versions, and you cannot mix and match versions.

For further information on SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition in SBS 2003 R2, please see SQL Server 2005 Workgroup in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition.

Q.Is SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition in SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition less feature-rich than SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition in SBS 2003 Premium Edition?
A.

First of all, let’s talk about the perception that SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition is somehow “less than” SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition. When you compare the two versions, SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition is a fantastic feature improvement for small businesses over the previous version. It contains better reporting, better management, better security – all the features that help small-to-medium businesses get the day’s work done. Out of all the versions that the SQL Server team built from the code base, Workgroup Edition is the one that most closely matched the needs of small business owners. See the chart in the SQL Server 2005 Workgroup FAQ for details on how Workgroup Edition fares against the earlier version.

Second, SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition has a dramatic price increase, both for the core product and for the CALs needed to access the server. See http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.mspx for details on product models and pricing. When these factors are considered, SBS 2003 R2 continues to be the “best fit” technology and the “best value” business solution for the small business market.

Q.Will SBS 2003 R2 be available in 64-bit versions?
A.

No. SBS 2003 R2 will be 32-bit only. A 64-bit version is planned for the Longhorn timeframe; at that point, SBS will transition to the new code base and will no longer be available in 32-bit versions. You can still run SBS 2003 R2 on a 64-bit system in 32-bit compatibility mode. This allows you to purchase robust hardware that can run your business today and be ready for a 64-bit upgrade in the future.

Q.Will Exchange Server 2007 be included in Windows SBS?
A.

Yes, Exchange Server 2007 will be an integral part of the next version of Windows SBS based upon the Windows Server (code hame "Longhorn") release. The next version of Windows SBS is expected to be released six to twelve months following the release of Windows Server (code hame "Longhorn").

Q. I’ve heard something about Daylight Savings Time updates or DST 2007? What do I need to know?
A.

In August of 2005 the United States Congress passed the Energy Policy Act, which changes the dates of both the start and end of Daylight Saving Time (DST). Updates to several Microsoft products are required to fully implement this change on an SBS Server. Full details on the updates required are available at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_topissues. At this time there are no unique SBS 2003 updates required, although there are updates required to several SBS components (Windows Server, Exchange Server, Outlook 2003, Windows SharePoint Services). Please follow the detailed instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_topissues.
