If you have an existing server in your network, you can upgrade it to Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2. You can upgrade your server in two ways:
| • | Upgrade the existing server to Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2. |
| • | Install Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 on a new server, and then migrate the data and settings from the existing server. |
Notes
| • | You can install Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 technologies only on a computer that is running Windows Small Business 2003 with Service Pack 1. If you want to upgrade from an existing server to Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 and you have not installed Service Pack 1 for Windows Small Business Server 2003, you must install the service pack before you run Setup for the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 technologies. To learn more and to either download or order the Service Pack 1 CD package, visit Windows Small Business Server Service Pack 1. |

The upgrade option you can use depends on the operating system that your existing server is running. If your server is running one of the following operating systems, you can choose to either upgrade the server or migrate to a new server:
| • | Windows Small Business Server 2000 |
| • | Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition |
| • | Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition |
If your server is running one of the following operating systems, your only upgrade option is to migrate to a new server:
| • | Small Business Server 4.5 |
| • | Windows NT 4.0 Server |
Your purchasing options for upgrading depend on which operating system your existing server is running.
| • | If your existing server is running Small Business Server 4.0, 4.5, or 2000, you can purchase the Version Upgrade Edition in order to either upgrade or migrate your server to Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2. |
| • | If your existing server is running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition, or Windows NT 4.0 Server, you must purchase either Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition or Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Edition. The upgrade or migration of these operating systems is not covered by the Version Upgrade Edition. |

Small Business Server 4.0
| • | To upgrade from Small Business Server 4.0, you must complete a new installation. For more information about completing a new installation, see Chapter 3A in Getting Started: Windows Small Business Server 2003 with SP1. After you complete the new installation, you must copy data from your existing installation to the new server. |
When you upgrade to Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2, Setup helps you upgrade the operating system, configure the operating system to the needs of your small business, and complete To Do List tasks. Before you begin to upgrade, it is recommended that you complete the following tasks:
| • | Check the hardware requirements to ensure that your server meets the minimum requirements. For more information about hardware requirements, see Appendix A of the Getting Started: Windows Small Business Server 2003 with SP1. |
| • | Ensure that the partition where the operating system and server applications are installed is at least 15 gigabytes. |
| • | Verify that your server and your existing applications are compatible with the Windows Server hardware recommendations. For more information, see the Windows Server Catalog. |
| • | Verify that you have up-to-date drivers for your hardware devices and the latest system BIOS (basic input/output system). |
| • | Complete the list of tasks in Chapter 3B and Chapter 3C of Getting Started: Windows Small Business Server 2003 with SP1 |
| • | Read the Release Notes. |

To complete an upgrade
1. | Log on to the server, using the built-in Administrator account. |
2. | Insert Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Disc 1 into the CD-ROM drive. The Autorun page should appear. If it does not appear, click click Start, click Run, and then type D:\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. If you are using the DVD, type D:\CD1\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of your DVD drive. |
3. | Click Set up Windows Small Business Server. |
4. | On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows Small Business Server page, click Next. |
5. | The Upgrade Information page lists tasks to complete before you begin the upgrade. |
6. | Follow the instructions to complete the wizard. |
7. | Install Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Technologies, if this applies to you. |
8. | Complete the To Do List tasks. |
9. | Insert the R2 Technologies disc in your CD-ROM drive. The Autorun page should appear. If it does not appear, click Start, click Run, and then type D:\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. If you are using the DVD, type D:\CD1\Setup.exe, where D: is the letter of your DVD drive. |
10. | Click Windows Small Business Server R2 |
11. | Follow the instructions to complete the wizard. |
