Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services

MSDSS helps reduce the directory management burden for organizations that already have NDS deployed in their IT environment and are considering a large or small deployment of Windows Server 2003. MSDSS also helps facilitate the adoption of Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory. MSDSS does all this by synchronizing Active Directory and NDS.

The administration of multiple directory services often leads to time-consuming and redundant management. By establishing a periodic synchronization of both directories, MSDSS helps customer reduce the time they expend on directory management. Synchronization and Active Directory setup are easy to do through the MSDSS management interface, a fully-featured environment that provides customers with a choice of management, synchronization, and migration options.

MSDSS supports all major NetWare platforms and most Novell directories and binderies and includes support for IPX/SPX and TCP/IP network protocols.

Note: A server running Windows Server 2003 must be configured as a domain controller to use MSDSS.

Ease of Synchronization

With MSDSS, you can synchronize a wide variety of data stored in Active Directory with NDS and NetWare 3.x binderies. A highly flexible service, MSDSS helps Novell users:

Adopt Windows Server 2003 and the Active Directory service.

Reduce directory management through two-way synchronization.

Migrate NDS and bindery information to Windows Server 2003.

MSDSS supports two-way synchronization with NDS and one-way synchronization with NetWare 3.x binderies to provide a complete directory interoperability solution. MSDSS also supports password synchronization and provides a directory migration service.

Directory Flexibility

In addition, NetWare customers can use MSDSS to deploy Active Directory without having to replace existing directories or bear the cost of managing two separate directories. As a result, customers have the flexibility to:

Consolidate directory management when multiple directories are required.

Manage accounts from either directory.

Use directory-enabled applications, devices, and services based on the Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 Active Directory service.

Microsoft File Migration Utility

With File Migration Utility, large amounts of file data can be moved from all versions of NetWare to Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003. The File Migration Utility simplifies and accelerates the migration of files stored on NetWare servers to Windows Server 2003. Customers can choose to migrate files at their own pace and ensure that the file permissions unique to each file are preserved during the migration process.

Migrating from one platform to another can be time-consuming and costly. The File Migration Utility reduces the time and expense of migrating from a NetWare network operating system to the Windows 2000 Server platform. File Migration Utility copies groups of NetWare files from either one or several NetWare file and print servers to one or many "destination" servers running Windows 2000 Server of Windows Server 2003. This capability is known as one-to-many and many-to-many support.

Integrated with MSDSS, File Migration Utility preserves file-access control information so that security permissions are not lost during migration. In addition, users can access their files during the migration process, a benefit that results in a seamless and transparent migration experience. Gradual or direct migrations are made easier in File Migration Utility with a wizard-based, migration-management interface.

File Migration Utility supports all major NetWare file systems and platforms and includes support for IPX/SPX and TCP/IP network protocols.
