Effective December 31, 2004, per-incident and security update support for Windows NT Server 4.0 will end.

Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 was released in September 1996. It was not designed with the security and complexity of today's IT environment in mind and has reached the end of its effective support life.

Microsoft has been communicating this since September 2001 in order to help customers migrate their applications and infrastructure from Windows NT Server 4.0 to current Windows Server operating systems.

Customers in the process of upgrading from Windows NT Server 4.0 may obtain limited security update support through a custom support contract, available from Microsoft Services Premier Support and Customer Service Solutions. To qualify for custom support, customers should:

Have a migration plan in place

Sign up for custom support before March 31, 2005

Microsoft maintains that the best option for customers is to upgrade to Windows Server 2003, which will greatly enhance security, reliability, and performance. Guidance and tools are available to facilitate the upgrade process.

Please contact your Microsoft account team, Microsoft Services Premier Support, or Microsoft's Customer Service Solutions group for additional details and information.
