The Windows Server Fulfillment site provides you a way to upgrade from Windows Server 2008 Foundation or Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation (each of these may be referred to as a “Foundation Server”) to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Windows Server 2008 Foundation or Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation customers have the option to purchase an upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard in the same language as their original Foundation Server.

The Windows Server Fulfillment site offers an easy upgrade path to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard at an attractive price by extending a trade-in credit to customers who have previously licensed a Foundation Server and who wish to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Upgrade Options

The following table lists the supported scenarios for upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. Note: Client Access Licenses (each, a “CAL”, collectively, “CALs”) are required to access Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. Foundation Server users who do not own Windows Server 2008 CALs will need to purchase the CALs in order to access Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard offered through this site comes with 5 CALs. Additional CAL packs can be purchased via the Windows Server Fulfillment site if needed. The Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard software offered through this site is for installation on the server hardware that you acquired with your Foundation Server. Once you have completed the upgrade, your license to use Foundation Server is terminated and you may not transfer or sell the Foundation Server to a third party, or install it on another physical server.

Customers running Windows Server 2008 Foundation will need the media for Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to perform an in place upgrade.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation customers can perform the upgrade in one out of the two methods available:

  1. As an in-place upgrade with media, which will require you to run the installer or

  2. As an in-place upgrade using the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Product Key.

Microsoft recommends that the upgrade be performed by a member of your staff who is trained on Microsoft Server technology or by your Microsoft reseller.

Next Steps to Migrate

In order to upgrade from a Foundation Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, you will need your current 5x5 Product Key for your Foundation Server. This Product Key is located on the Certificate of Authenticity (“COA”) which is affixed to your server chassis. The COA will contain the key, as well as the name of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (“OEM”). If this key is not affixed to your server chassis, contact the re-seller where you purchased the server or contact your OEM directly.
